He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame. Learn More about Billy Harris: Billy Harris began his hockey career playing for the Toronto Marlboros from 1968-1972. He was the first overall draft pick in 1972 and was signed on to the New York Islanders where he would play until 1980. He is known for being the first New York Islander as at the time it was only an expansion team. He was traded in March of 1980 to the Los Angeles Kings for Butch Goring, and the following year the Islanders would win the Stanley Cup. He played three seasons with the Kings before moving to Toronto for three seasons. He played one last time for the Kings before retiring after the 1983-1984 season. While Harris never played for a Stanley Cup winning team, he is known for helping to turn an expansion team into a predominant force in the league.

Learn More about Billy Smith: Billy Smith was chosen 59th overall in the fifth round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft Pick by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup. Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team. For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975. In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game. For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch. During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team. Billy Smith won the Vezina Trophy and became a First Team All-Star in 1982 and won the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Smith was also credited as being the first goalie to score an NHL goal. He retired in 1989 and was the only original Islander left on the team at that point. His number (31) was retired on February 20th, 1993, and he became the only goalie to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame during the 1990’s later in that year. Learn More About Bryan Berard: While still in the minor leagues, Berard aided the Junior Red Wings to the Memorial Cup in 1995. He was named Top Rookie in the CHL in 1995, and was a member of both the OHL and CHL All-Star teams in 1995 and 1996. He was the first overall draft pick in 1995 for the Ottawa Senators, though they could not come to an agreement. Berard returned to the CHL where he was named Defenseman-of-the-Year. Bryan Berard would be traded to the New York Islanders where he would become a successful player. His efforts were rewarded in 1997 with a Calder Trophy. Despite a debilitating eye injury in early 2000 while playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Berard made a return to professional hockey after several operations and enjoyed two successful seasons with Boston and Chicago before signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Learn More about Bryan Trottier: Bryan Trottier was chosen 22nd overall by the New York Islanders in the 1974 NHL Entry Draft; he would play 15 seasons with them. He set a rookie record of 95 points in the 1975-1976 season, as well as winning the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year in the same season. In 1978-1979 Trottier scored 134 points, his best offensive season, winning him both the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies. Trottier won four Stanley Cups with the Islanders from 1980-1983. In the 1981 Canada Cup he played for his home country of Canada, however in 1984 he played for the United States as it was the country in which he lived and where his wife originated from. Trottier's offensive abilities deteriorated greatly from 1988-1990, at which point the Islanders released him from his contract with the team. He went on to play with Pittsburgh from 1991-1994, winning two more Stanley Cups with them in 1991 and 1992. After his last season in 1994 he retired from professional hockey. Bryan Trottier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and his number was retired by the Islanders in 2001. Learn More about Pat LaFontaine: Pat LaFontaine is an NHL Hall of Famer that spent his entire career playing for New York state based teams: the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers. Pat LaFontaine was selected 3rd overall by the New York Islanders in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. After representing Team USA in the 1984 Olympic Winter Games, LaFontaine made it back to the NHL in time to join the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Finals. The 1987-1988 season was the first of six 40 plus point seasons for Lafontaine. In the 1987 Stanley Cup division finals, LaFontaine scored the game winning goal in the 4th period of overtime against the Washington Capitals in game seven that was dubbed the “Easter Epic”. LaFontaine was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in October 1991 and during his second season with the Sabres, set a team record with 148 points. The potential hockey superstar suffered several career setbacks including concussions, a broken jaw and an injured knee. He was awarded the Bill Masterson Trophy at the end of the 1995 season for his determination and perseverance. He was traded to the New York Rangers but a series of concussions only saw Pat Lafontaine appear in 62 games. He retired at the end of the season with 468 goals and 1013 points. The Sabres retired his number 16 in 2006 and LaFontaine was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.
