Elmer Lach was a gifted player that had superior speed and passing ability.  He was a tough competitor that wasn’t afraid to fight for the puck.  Although he sustained many injuries through his career, he often tried to hide it to stay in the game. Lach retired after the 1953-1954 season as the league's all-time leading scorer, having played 664 regular season games, scoring 215 goals and 408 assists for 623 points.  After retirement Elmer Lach coached the Montreal Junior Canadiens and the Montreal Royals for two seasons.  Elmer Lach was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and his number 16 was retired a second time by the Canadiens (the first time it was retired for Henri Richard).  In 2017 before the Winter Classic, Elmer Lach was part of the first group of players to be named one of the "100 Greatest Players in NHL history". Worsley played in the minor leagues for 4 years and didn't enter the NHL until he was 24 years old. He won the Calder Memorial trophy and was the Rookie of the Year, in 1952, when he joined the NHL and played for the New York Rangers.  In 1954 he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where he won Most Valuable Player.  In 1954, he returned to the New York Rangers as a starting goaltender beating out future star Johnny Bower for the op spot.  Gump Worsley spent nine seasons with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1963. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969.  In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the play-offs with 11 straight wins.  Worsley retired in the middle of the 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shut out.  Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44.  He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask.  Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played.  He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and a goals against average of 2.91.  Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.  Sadly, Gump Worsley passed away from a heart attack in 2007. Adam Oates was a first-line centre with the St. Louis Blues playing alongside superstar Brent Hull.  The duo dubbed “Hull and Oates” put up prolific numbers in their two and a half seasons together with Hull scoring 86 goals one season and Oates with 115 points.  Adam Oates is the only person in NHL history to centre 50 goals scorers with him assisting Hull, Cam Neely and Peter Bondra.  Not only was Oates great at setting goals into motion with a career total of 1079 assists at the time of his retirement (5th in the league).  He was also a consistent goal scorer himself reaching the 20-goal mark five times with a career high 45 goals. Learn More about Rick Middleton: Rick Middleton was a right winger that played in the NHL from 1974-1988 for the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins.  Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player.  Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates.  Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform.  Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill.  Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games.  He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14.  His record 105 points in the 1983-1984 season tied Ken Hodges for most points by a right winger for the Boston franchise.  He retired from hockey after 1005 regular season games and 988 points. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974.  He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.”  He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year.  He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games.  Don Cherry is a strong support of tough “Canadian” type hockey that encourages fighting and physical play.  Cherry had his own video series, Don Cherry’s Rock Em’, Sock Em Hockey that included hockey highlights and his trademark banter.  He is also the owner of a successful chain of restaurants as well as an owner of the Mississauga Ice Dogs. Learn More About Ted Lindsay: Ted Lindsay was a professional ice hockey player who played forward for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.  He was a fierce competitor that earned the nickname “Terrible Ted” because of his rough and tough style of play, causing the NHL to create new penalties such as elbowing.  Despite his time spent in the penalty box, Ted Lindsay was a great player who scored over 800 points during his Hall of Fame career.  Lindsay also won four Stanley cups with the Detroit Red Wings and was named in the first group of NHL's 100 greatest Players in 2017. Ted Lindsay’s first season was in 1944 when he was 19.  He first played for Detroit and was part of the high scoring “Production Line” with Sid Abel and superstar Gordie Howe.  In the 1949-1950 season, Lindsay won the Art Ross Trophy for leading the league in points during the regular and played a large role in his team winning the Stanley Cup.  In the late 1950s Lindsay also helped organize the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA).  This was a huge factor to Ted Lindsay being traded to the Blackhawks.  Lindsay played three seasons with the Blackhawks but wanted to retire a Red Wing so his last season in 1964-65 he played for Detroit. Ted Lindsay was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.  Also, Ted Lindsay's #7 was retired by the Detroit Red Wings in 1991.
