Learn More about Andy Bathgate:

Andy Bathgate was an elite right winger and top NHL goal scorer that played predominantly for the New York Rangers as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.  He entered the NHL in 1952 despite a horrific knee injury suffered in minor leagues and played all but 5 games in 11 seasons for the Rangers.  He was an excellent skater, easily weaving his way through the opposing team and he had one of the hardest shots in the league. During a Rangers game vs. the Montreal Canadiens, Bathgate took a slapshot that hit goaltender Jacques Plante in the face which required stitches.  When he returned to the game, Plante wore the first goalie mask in an NHL game.

In the 1963-64 season, Andy Bathgate was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup.  The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals.  He also played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where they won two consecutive Lester Patrick Cups.

In 1978, Andy Bathgate was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame.  On February 22, 2009, Andy Bathgate’s #9 was raised to the rafters by the New York Rangers.  Sadly, Mr. Bathgate passed away in 2016 at the age of 83.
