Learn more about Bill Hay:
Bill Hay’s career as a player was short lived whereby he only spent 7 seasons (1960-1967) in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks. He began his hockey star journey as a junior star with the Regina Pats. Although the Montreal Canadiens owned his rights, Bill Hay and a friend hitched to Colorado College where they convinced the college to accept them as students on athletic scholarships. Bill Hay played NCAA hockey for the school leading them to a championship and earning a geology degree along the way. Hay is regarded as one of the pioneers of U.S. College hockey to help develop NHL players.
The Chicago Blackhawks purchased Mr. Hay’s rights from Montreal after a successful season with affiliate team, the Calgary Stampeders. He was the NHL’s top rookie that year and earned the Calder Trophy. Bill Hay centered the “Million Dollar Line” with Bobby Hull and Murray Balfour, helping the Blackhawks capture the 1961 Stanley Cup Championship–the first Stanley Cup for Chicago since 1938. Refusing to sign with expansion team, the St. Louis Blues due to family obligations, Bill Hay retired from hockey at the age of 31.
After a successful stint in the family oil business, Bill Hay became part owner and president of the Calgary Flames and he spent 33 years in varying executive positions in the Hockey Hall of Fame, including 15 as CEO. In 2015, Bill Hay was selected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder and pioneer of Hockey Excellence.
