Bob Gainey played 16 seasons in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and was known as one of the best defensive forwards and all-around players of his time.  His combination of speed, determination, and physical play earned him four consecutive Frank J. Selke Trophies as the league’s best defensive forward from 1976-1979, the same years he helped lead his team to four Stanley Cup Championships.

In 1982, Bob Gainey succeeded Serge Savard and became Captain of the Montreal Canadiens.  In 1986, he won his fifth career Stanley Cup and he announced his retirement the following year.  In all, Bob Gainey finished his career after 1160 regular season games with 239 goals and 263 assists.  He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.

After his retirement as a player, Bob Gainey went on to coach the Minnesota North Stars and also became the team’s general manager.  He received another Stanley Cup as GM of the Dallas Stars in 1999.  Gainey later on became general manager and interim coach for the Montreal Canadiens.
