Learn More About Chuck Rayner:

Chuck Rayner was a goaltender in the NHL.  He played for the New York Americans and the New York Rangers.  Originally, Rayner played for the Kenora Thistles in the Manitoba Junior League.  He showed his potential by backstopping the team into getting a Memorial Cup.  The year after that he turned professional and played for the Americans however he spent most of his time on the affiliate team the Springfield Indians of the AHL.  When Rayner was with the Indians he led the league in shutouts and goals against average.  He was named to the Second All-Star Team.

The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded.  Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy.  He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria.

After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945.  Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons.  Although Rayner hadn’t set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era.  1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Chuck Rayner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973.
