Learn More about Dave “The Hammer” Schultz:

Dave Schultz was best known as a hockey enforcer that played in the NHL from 1969 to 1980.  He was most known as an enforcer during the Philadelphia Flyers’ “Broad Street Bullies” era.  Schultz was never really comfortable in his role but understood being an enforcer was necessary to keep him playing in the NHL.  His devastating right hand earned him the nickname “the Hammer”, and two Stanley Cup Championships with the Flyers in 1974 and 1975.  He is the only NHL player in history to have more than 400 penalty minutes in two seasons.  He also holds the record for most penalty minutes in a playoff game when he earned 42 against Toronto’s archrival Dave “Tiger” Williams when he picked up a minor penalty, two five-minute majors, a 10-minute misconduct and a double game misconduct.

Dave “the Hammer” Schultz also lent his muscle to the Pittsburgh Penguins, LA Kings and the Buffalo Sabres.  Schultz laced up his skates in 1980 and later expressed his regret about his enforcer role and the prominence of fighting in hockey in a book he co-authored called The Hammer.

Post retirement, he coached several minor league teams over the next two decades.  He was inducted into the Flyers’ Hall of Fame in 2009.  He still holds the NHL record for most penalty minutes in a season with 472 during the 1974-1975 season.
