Mario Lemieux is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time in the NHL. Mario Lemieux spent parts of 17 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1984-2006. As a player Mario Lemieux Lemieux led Pittsburgh to two consecutive Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. As an owner the Pittsburgh Penguins won a third Stanley Cup in 2009. Mario Lemieux is the only person to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup as a player and an owner.
Mario Lemieux also led Team Canada to gold medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics, a championship at the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and at the 1987 Canada Cup. Mario Lemieux has won multiple individual awards over the course of his NHL careers. Four time Lester B. Pearson Award as the most outstanding player voted by the players, Three time Hart Trophy winner as the NHL’s most valuable player during the regular season, 6 time Art Ross Trophy winner as the league’s points leader, and tow time Conn Smythe Trophy winner during the Pittsburgh Penguins 2 Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992. At the time of Mario Lemieux’s retirement, he was the NHL’s seventh-ranked all-time scorer with 690 goals and 1,033 assists. He ranks second in NHL history with a 0.754 goals-per game average for his career, behind only Islanders great Mike Bossy.
Mario Lemieux was inducted in the NHL Hall of Fame when he first retired in 1997. When he returned to the NHL for the 2000-01 season, he became the third player in history to return to ice after being inducted. The other two players were Gordie Howe and Guy Lafleur.
In 2004, Mario Lemieux was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
