Learn More About Rod Langway:

Rod Langway was a professional ice hockey defenseman.  He played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals in the NHL.  In the WHA he played for the Birmingham Bulls.

Langway was first drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1977 and in that same year by the Bulls.  Langway only played one season with the Bulls 1977-1978 before officially playing for the Canadiens.  His first season in the NHL was 1978-1979 and with Montreal he won a Stanley Cup.  Langway played for Montreal until 1982-1983 when he was traded to Washington.  Shortly after that trade the Capitals made Langway captain; a position he held for his remaining 11 seasons.

Although some thought Langway was not very offensive, he played his position phenomenally and he was awarded with the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defensemen in 1983 and 1984.  Internationally, Langway represented the U.S.A. and played for them in 1981, 1984 and the 1987 Canada Cup.  He also played in the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1982.  After retiring from playing, Langway was a coach for teams in the minor leagues.

Rod Langway was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
