Learn More about Serge Savard:

Serge Savard was a popular defenseman who began playing on the Montreal Canadiens in 1966.  Savard played in the NHL for 17 seasons.  He played for the Montreal Canadiens for 15 and the Winnipeg Jets for 2.  Even though Savard was overshadowed by some of the other players on the team, he won the Bill Masterson Memorial trophy in 1979.  This award was given yearly to the player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and a dedication to hockey”.  Savard was also known as one of the Big Three star defensemen on the Montreal Canadiens.

Savard was a great player but during a game in 1970-1971 he attempted to stop a breakaway.  This caused five fractures in his leg.  Although he got back on the ice three months later he fractured his leg once again in 1973 and hurt his ankle when he was trying to help firefighters break a door down at the Canadien’s hotel.

Despite his injuries, Savard’s hard work, patience and hard-charging hockey style led the Canadiens to win another Cup in 1976. He played his last two seasons on the Winnipeg Jets and then went back to the Canadiens to become the managing director. Serge Savard was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
