Learn More About Steve Smith:
Steve Smith was a professional ice hockey player, a defenseman that played for the Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks and the Calgary Flames.
Smith was originally drafted by the Oilers in 1981. He began his NHL career in 1985 playing in 55 regular season games and six playoff games. In 1986 Smith and the Oilers were playing in Game 7 of the Smyth Division Final against Calgary. In the third period Smith was trying to get the puck out of the zone but it ricocheted off the goaltender and into the net. The Oilers didn’t recover and lost the game. Fans were upset about this but Smith’s teammates stood by his side. The next year the Oilers won the Stanley Cup and Wayne Gretzky let Smith have the first lap around the ice with the trophy to make up for it.
Smith played with the Oilers until 1990-1991; he won 3 Stanley Cups with the Oilers. He was traded to the Blackhawks and played with them until 1997. He was injured but made a comeback and played 3 seasons with the Flames before retiring for good in 2000.
After retirement, he was an assistant coach in 1997-1998 for the Flames. Smith worked as a scout with Chicago before four seasons with the Oilers (from 2010-2014). He was also an assistant coach for the Hurricanes starting in 2014.
