Johnny Bower played a large part of his hockey career in the minor leagues with a brief stint in for the New York Rangers before becoming the Toronto Maple Leafs’ starting goaltender. He played for Toronto from 1958-59 season to 1969-70 and was nicknamed the China Wall for his solid goaltending at an older age.
Johnny Bower played for Toronto for 11 seasons, bringing home 3 Consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1962, 1963 and 1964. He would win one more Stanley Cup in 1967, with tandem goaltender Terry Sawchuk, with whom he shared the Vezina trophy for best goaltender.
Johnny Bower would receive many awards and honors after his retirement from hockey in 1970. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (1976), the AHL Hall of Fame (1998), the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame (1999) and in 2007, Johnny Bower received his star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. In 2014, Johnny Bower, alongside Ted Kennedy and Daryl Sittler, were inducted into Legends Row, a Statue outside of the Air Canada Centre depicting the 12 greatest Toronto Maple Leafs of all time.
