Learn More about Billy Smith: Billy Smith was chosen 59th overall in the fifth round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft Pick by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup. Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team. For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975. In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game. For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch. During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team. Billy Smith won the Vezina Trophy and became a First Team All-Star in 1982 and won the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Smith was also credited as being the first goalie to score an NHL goal. He retired in 1989 and was the only original Islander left on the team at that point. His number (31) was retired on February 20th, 1993, and he became the only goalie to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame during the 1990’s later in that year. Learn More about Mike Modano: Mike Modano was drafted 1st overall by the Minnesota North Stars in 1988 and joined the team for the 1989-90 season. Modano played 4 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars including the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Modano was a finalist for the 1990 Calder Trophy but lost out to Sergei Makarov. Prior to the 1993-1994 NHL Season the North Stars relocated to Dallas becoming the now known Dallas Stars. Modano finished with 93 points (50 Goals and 43 Asssits) becoming a hockey idol selling the most jerseys and receiving the most fan letters during that season. In 1999 Modano won the Stanley Cup while with a broken wrist that he suffered in game 2 against the Buffalo Sabres. Modano assisted on the Stars' final five goals of the series, including both in Game 5 and Game 6, and led the Stars with 23 points in the playoffs, with all seven in the finals on assists. Modano scored his 500th career regular-season goal on March 13, 2007. He is only the 14th goal scorer to score 500 goals with a single team and the 39th player to reach 500 goals overall. On March 17, 2007, in an away game versus the Nashville Predators Modano scored his 502nd and 503rd career regular-season goals in a 3–2 loss, thus passing Joe Mullen's NHL record (502) for most goals scored by an American-born player. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Kelly was a versatile player that not only had great checking skills, he also had great offensive ability that allowed him to quickly get the puck down the ice. Kelly was a great asset to the Red Wings, in his 12 years with the organization they won 8 regular season championships, four Stanley Cups and was chosen First Team All-Star defenceman six times. Playing alongside goal scorer Frank Mahovlich, the Toronto Maple Leafs won 4 Stanley Cups in Kelly’s 8 seasons on the team. Red Kelly decided to retire on a high note, ending his playing career after winning his eighth Stanley Cup in 1967. Red Kelly continued his career in the NHL as coach of new expansion team, the Los Angeles Kings. Despite being a rookie coach, Kelly’s team made the playoffs two years in a row.
