Alex Delvecchio was an NHL center and left winger that played his entire 24 season career with the Detroit Red Wings. He began his playing career in 1950 and in the 1951-52 season became a full-time team member, winning the Stanley Cup in his rookie season. He was part of the high scoring Production Line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. He won his second and third Stanley Cup in 1954 and 1955.
Although Alex Delvecchio was a top goal scorer and gifted playmaker, he was best known as a classy player and true gentleman. He was well liked by his teammates which led to him being named captain of the Red Wings from 1962 until he retired as a player in 1974. At the conclusion of his career, he had played 1549 regular season games with 456 goals, 825 assists and 1281 points. His number 10 was retired by the Red Wings and he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977.
Following his retirement as a player, Alex Delvecchio remained with the Detroit Red Wings as head coach and general manager from 1973-1977. In January, 2017, Delvecchio was part of the first group of players to be named one of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ in history.
