Learn More about Darryl Sittler

Darryl Sittler is a retired NHL Centre who played professional hockey from 1970 until 1985 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings.  In his first season as captain of the Maple Leafs, he finished the season with 41 goals and 59 assists, the first Leaf ever to reach the one-hundred-point level.  In the Canada Cup that year, he scored the winning goal for Team Canada in overtime.  Sittler also set an NHL record for most points in one game which still stands.

Due to a breakdown in communication with ownership and management of the Maple Leafs, Sittler requested to be traded.  In 1982 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers where he played one season.  On the same day the Flyers were going to announce Sittler as their captain, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings.

After retirement, Sittler was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.  He was also elected to the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2016.  On October 15, 2016, the Toronto Maple Leafs officially retired Darryl Sittler’s jersey number 27.  Sittler was also named on the Hockey News’ list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players.
