Learn More about Chris Chelios: Chris Chelios was the second oldest player in NHL history (behind Gordie Howe) to retire after 26 seasons in the NHL at the age of 48. Chelios was drafted in 1981 by the Montreal Canadiens where he played from 1984-1990. Chris Chelios quickly established himself as a strong offensive defenseman, scoring 64 points in 74 games. He made the NHL All-Star game and the 1985 NHL All-Rookie Team. In the 1985-86 season, Chelios would win his first Stanley Cup Championship. Chris Chelios was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks where he played from 1990-1999. He was captain of the Blackhawks from 1995-1999. He then went to play for the Detroit Red Wings where he played another decade, taking home 2 more Stanley Cups. He played 2 more seasons for the Atlanta Thrashers before officially retiring in 2010. During his long career, Chelios would make 11 All-Star appearances, and he was the winner of 3 James Norris Trophies. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Learn More about Eddie Giacomin: Ed Giacomin was an NHL goaltender that played during the Original Six Era from 1965 when he made it to the big league to 1978. He played for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Ed Giacomin overcame many obstacles on his journey to the NHL. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Giacomin spent his last three years as a player with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1978. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and his number 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989. He played in the NHL and WHA as a goaltender. During his career, Mio played for the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and the Indianapolis Racers. Mio first put himself on the map for professional hockey when he decided to join the Colorado College from 1972-1976. During that time Mio became a standout as he won first and second all-star awards. He also made the NCAA west first all-American team two years in a row. In 1974, Mio was officially drafted by the Blackhawks and the Blazers of the WHA but he played with neither and spent most of his time playing with smaller teams until he went to the Indianapolis Racers. Mio's goaltending was rough with the Racers and the biggest thing in his career would be befriending Wayne Gretzky. Shortly after that Mio was traded again to the Oilers in 1978. In Alberta, Mio got his first NHL action and had his first winning season in 1980-1981 before being traded again to the Rangers. With New York Mio backstopped the Rangers for two seasons, then he was traded to Detroit for a season before retiring in 1986.
