Learn More about Andy Bathgate: Andy Bathgate was an elite right winger and top NHL goal scorer that played predominantly for the New York Rangers as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He entered the NHL in 1952 despite a horrific knee injury suffered in minor leagues and played all but 5 games in 11 seasons for the Rangers. He was an excellent skater, easily weaving his way through the opposing team and he had one of the hardest shots in the league. During a Rangers game vs. the Montreal Canadiens, Bathgate took a slapshot that hit goaltender Jacques Plante in the face which required stitches. When he returned to the game, Plante wore the first goalie mask in an NHL game. In the 1963-64 season, Andy Bathgate was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals. He also played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where they won two consecutive Lester Patrick Cups. In 1978, Andy Bathgate was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On February 22, 2009, Andy Bathgate’s #9 was raised to the rafters by the New York Rangers. He was the first goalie to practice and perfect the now common butterfly stance, as he'd fall on knees, spread his legs to take away the bottom corners and five-hole and let his rapier-like arm reflexes take care of the top corners. Almost every goalie in hockey today relies on the strategies he perfected. During his 18-year NHL career, which began in 1952 and ended in 1971, Glenn posted a 407-327-163 record, 2.51 goals-against-average and recorded 84 shutouts. He was a First Team All-Star seven times, won three Vezina Trophies, was voted the league's top rookie in 1955-56 and was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy in a losing cause in 1968. Despite his lengthy career, Glenn won his only Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 1961. Hall played his rookie season and more with Detroit Red Wings, before a trade involving a Red Wings goalie. Glen Hall was packaged up in the infamous Ted Lindsay trade to the Chicago Blackhawks. At the age of 36, he was left unprotected in the 1967 Expansion Draft and was chosen by the St. Louis Blues. Due in large part to Hall's heroics, St. Louis went all the way to the Stanley Cup final in their first year in the NHL.
