He became a starting player for the Canadiens in 1950 and impressed the coaching staff with his durability, speed, stickhandling and accurate passing skills. Tom Johnson’s talent was turning over the puck without physical contact with opposing forwards, leading to breakaways for his team. He was often switched to center if a goal was needed late in the game due to his ability to win faceoffs and accurately pass the puck. Tom Johnson was part of the Canadiens’ glory years winning the Stanley Cup Championship in 1953 and five consecutive cups from 1956-1960. Tom Johnson was left unprotected by the Habs following an eye injury that had the potential to end his career. He was picked up by the Boston Bruins where he played for 121 games before a skate severed the nerves in his leg forcing him into retirement.
