He played right wing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes. With these teams Gartner played a total of 19 seasons. Gartner was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1979 and made his debut that year in October against the Buffalo Sabres. 1979-1980 was a solid season for Gartner. When Gartner was traded in 1989, he left Washington as the all-time leader in career goals, assists and points. As of 2017, Gartner is third in goals and points and fourth in assists. Despite Gartner being a skillful player, he only lasted one season with Minnesota before he was traded to the Rangers. Gartner scored 11 goals and 16 points in the remaining 12 regular season games. The next season, 1990-1991, Gartner became the first player to reach his 500th goal, 500th assist and 100th point all in one season. The next season he became the first Ranger to score at least 40 goals in 3 consecutive seasons. Gartner was traded again in 1993-1994 to the Leafs. He played with them until 1996 when he was traded to the Coyotes before he retired, two seasons later. By playing in this one game, Tikkanen was eligible to have his name put on the Stanley Cup before his career even began. Tikkanen played with the Oilers until 1991. After this his career was a bit jumpy. In 1993, he was traded to the Rangers for a season. He was then traded to the St. Louis Blues where he played 11 games when he was traded to the New Jersey Devils. In 1996-1997, Tikkanen was traded yet again to the Rangers. In the summer of 1997 Tikkanen became a free agent but soon signed a contract with the Panthers which was also a short stay as he was traded to the Capitals. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Giacomin spent his last three years as a player with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1978. He is the son of the legendary Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe and brother of Marty Howe. Mark played left wing for the Houston Aeros of the WHA as linemate to his brother Marty and father Gordie who came out of retirement to play alongside his two sons. The Howes led their team to the 1974 and 1975 Avco Cups—the WHA version of the Stanley Cup. Mark also won the Lou Kaplan Trophy as Rookie of the Year. The Howe family moved to the New England Whalers which became the Hartford Whalers when the WHA and NHL merged. The Howes played one more season together in the NHL. Mark Howe was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1982 and by then he had become a full-time defenseman. The 1985-1986 season was a career season for Mark where he put up some of the best numbers ever by an NHL defenseman with 24 goals and 58 assists for 82 points. Despite Mark Howe’s contribution, the injury-riddled Flyers were not playoff contenders. After the 1991-1992 season, Mark Howe signed with the Detroit Red Wings, his father’s former team in the hopes of winning a Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the Red Wings were swept by the New Jersey Devils in the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals. Following his retirement as a player, Howe remained with the Detroit Red Wings as a video coach and pro scout, earning Stanley Cup rings in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. Learn More about Alex Delvecchio: Alex Delvecchio was an NHL center and left winger that played his entire 24 season career with the Detroit Red Wings. He began his playing career in 1950 and in the 1951-52 season became a full-time team member, winning the Stanley Cup in his rookie season. He was part of the high scoring Production Line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. He won his second and third Stanley Cup in 1954 and 1955. Although Alex Delvecchio was a top goal scorer and gifted playmaker, he was best known as a classy player and true gentleman. He was a three time recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanlike conduct. He was well liked by his teammates which led to him being named captain of the Red Wings from 1962 until he retired as a player in 1974. At the conclusion of his career, he had played 1549 regular season games with 456 goals, 825 assists and 1281 points. His number 10 was retired by the Red Wings and he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977. Following his retirement as a player, Alex Delvecchio remained with the Detroit Red Wings as head coach and general manager from 1973-1977. In January, 2017, Delvecchio was part of the first group of players to be named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. Learn More about Rick Middleton: Rick Middleton was a right winger that played in the NHL from 1974-1988 for the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. His record 105 points in the 1983-1984 season tied Ken Hodges for most points by a right winger for the Boston franchise. He retired from hockey after 1005 regular season games and 988 points. The hard-nosed winger was on the formidable line with superstar Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge. His strength was in battling in the corners and forechecking. He also served as enforcer protecting Esposito and Bobby Orr. Wayne Cashman was part of two Stanley Cup winning teams in 1970 and 1972. He is best known for his time spent in Montreal when he established himself as one of the “Big Three” defenseman including Serge Savard and Larry Robinson. The “Big Three” were a key component to the Habs winning the Stanley Cup six times in 1971, 1973, 1976-1979. Guy Lapointe was an all-around defenseman that excelled in checking but also had a lethal slapshot. He was often used on the powerplay. He only spent two seasons with St. Louis and one with the Boston Bruins before announcing his retirement. Internationally, Guy Lapointe represented Team Canada and was chosen to play in the famous 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. He played again in the 1976 Canada Cup. Lapointe finished his career after playing 884 regular season games with 622 points, including 171 goals and 451 assists. He still holds the record for most goals for any Montreal defensemen with 28 and most goals for a rookie defenseman with 15. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
