He went into the NHL with high expectations following a successful minor league season with the Markham Waxers of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association where he scored 197 points over 66 games. He was drafted 1st overall in the 2006 OHL Draft by the Sarnia Sting recording 92 points as a junior rookie in 63 games. He joined the Lightning at the start of the 2008-09 season and he scored his first NHL hat trick after only 54 games becoming the first Lightning rookie to score 3 goals in a game. He also became the second youngest player to do so after Bobby Carpenter (age 18) in 1982. In his second year with the Lightning, Stamkos established himself as a sharpshooter joining the top 5 in NHL scoring by the time he was 20. He also set an NHL record with 5 overtime goals in the regular season. Currently, Steven Stamkos holds the franchise record for most power play goals. He tied Martin St. Louis’ longest season opening point streak in Lightning history. He is also tied with Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier for most 4 point games in franchise history.
