He was the first overall draft pick in 1972 and was signed on to the New York Islanders where he would play until 1980. He is known for being the first New York Islander as at the time it was only an expansion team. He was traded in March of 1980 to the Los Angeles Kings for Butch Goring, and the following year the Islanders would win the Stanley Cup. He played three seasons with the Kings before moving to Toronto for three seasons. He played one last time for the Kings before retiring after the 1983-1984 season. While Harris never played for a Stanley Cup winning team, he is known for helping to turn an expansion team into a predominant force in the league.
