Learn More about John Tavares: Though a great effort was made to allow John Tavares into the 2008 Draft Picks despite being born five days after the cut-off date of eligibility, this exception was not allowed and he was made to wait until 2009.  In the 2009 League Entry Draft, Tavares was chosen first overall by the New York Islanders.  He scored both his first professional assist and goal in his first game on October 3rd, 2009.  Through much of the 2009-2010 season, Tavares led rookie scoring in the league, including five consecutive Islanders goals in four games.  He had 54 points at the end of the season, ranking second in rookie scoring.  He scored his first hat-trick on October 23^rd, 2010 and his second on January 15^th, 2011.  He played in the 2012 All-Star Game where he scored one goal and one assist.  In 2013 Tavares became the 14th Islanders captain in the team's history, but due to a major injury was unable to complete either the Olympics or the rest of the regular season.  He did make a recovery and played in the 2015 All-Star Game and continued with the Islanders.
