Learn More about Billy Smith: Billy Smith was chosen 59th overall in the fifth round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft Pick by the Los Angeles Kings.  He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup.  Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team.  For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975.  In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game.  For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch.  During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team. Billy Smith won the Vezina Trophy and became a First Team All-Star in 1982 and won the William M.
