He played right wing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes. With these teams Gartner played a total of 19 seasons. Gartner was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1979 and made his debut that year in October against the Buffalo Sabres. 1979-1980 was a solid season for Gartner. When Gartner was traded in 1989, he left Washington as the all-time leader in career goals, assists and points. As of 2017, Gartner is third in goals and points and fourth in assists. Despite Gartner being a skillful player, he only lasted one season with Minnesota before he was traded to the Rangers. Gartner scored 11 goals and 16 points in the remaining 12 regular season games. The next season, 1990-1991, Gartner became the first player to reach his 500th goal, 500th assist and 100th point all in one season. The next season he became the first Ranger to score at least 40 goals in 3 consecutive seasons. Gartner was traded again in 1993-1994 to the Leafs. He played with them until 1996 when he was traded to the Coyotes before he retired, two seasons later. Learn More About Pete Stemkowski: Pete Stemkowski is a professional ice hockey player that played for fifteen seasons in the NHL. Stemkowski played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings. One of the milestones in his career was winning the Stanley Cup with the Leafs in 1967. Stemkowski played for the Leafs at the beginning of his career but was traded late during the 1967-1968 season. He played with Detroit, he even achieved a 20-goal season. Stemkowski was traded to the Rangers before the 1970-1971 season. He played seven seasons. Stemkowski had a fine first season which set the tone for his seven seasons of success with the Rangers. This also included three straight 20 goal seasons. After his seven seasons Stemkowski was traded to Los Angeles. With them Stemkowski finished his NHL career, playing only a season with the Kings. Some highlights of Stemkowski’s career would be the winning of the Stanley Cup in 1967, the Memorial Cup in 1964 and Stemkowski also played with the All Star Team in 1968. He was a defenseman who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers. Stanowski played from 1939-1951. Stanowski was originally drafted by the Leafs in 1939. With them he won four Stanley Cups in 1942, 1945, 1947 and 1948. After his last Stanley Cup win, Stanowski was traded to the Rangers. He played with them until 1951 when he retired. Wally Stanowski passed away in 2015 and at the time of his death, Stanowski was marked the oldest surviving Maple Leaf. Unfortunately his career was cut short due to a series of multiple concussions and post-concussion syndrome that lasted years beyond retirement. Learn more about Johnny Bower: Johnny Bower played a large part of his hockey career in the minor leagues with a brief stint in for the New York Rangers before becoming the Toronto Maple Leafs’ starting goaltender. He played for Toronto from 1958-59 season to 1969-70 and was nicknamed the China Wall for his solid goaltending at an older age. Johnny Bower played for Toronto for 11 seasons, bringing home 3 Consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1962, 1963 and 1964. He would win one more Stanley Cup in 1967, with tandem goaltender Terry Sawchuk, with whom he shared the Vezina trophy for best goaltender. Johnny Bower would receive many awards and honors after his retirement from hockey in 1970. Fontinato had a long running feud with Gordie Howe which culminated in a fight where Howe broke Fontinato’s nose and dislocated his jaw. Howe described the fight as one of the most memorable of his career. Lou Fontinato was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he spent two more seasons before he suffered a career ending injury after colliding head first into the boards on a missed check. He was paralyzed for a month and did not regain feeling in his arms for four months. Lou Fontinato passed away on July 3, 2016 at the age of 84.
