His 61 goals won Leach what is now known as the Richard Trophy and he also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that season. He was drafted 7th overall in the 1972 draft. He spent only 11 games with the AHL affiliate before being called up to the Flyers, scoring 30 goals and 34 assists in his rookie season making him a contender for the Calder Trophy. He was part of the power LCB line with Reggie Leach and Bobby Clarke. Barber was driven to become an all-around player for every type of situation. He was part of the Flyers’ “Broad Street Bullies” era but he was never a goon or partook in the violent aspect of the game. Barber along with his LCB linemates played a significant role in the Flyers successful Stanley Cup Championships of 1974 and 1975. He captained the Flyers in the 1981-82 season and part of the following season. Bill Barber’s most memorable career moments came from his time representing Team Canada on the International Ice Hockey stage. He scored the game tying goal in the 1976 Canada Cup vs. the Czechoslovakian team to force overtime and Team Canada’s victory. Unfortunately, Bill Barber suffered from a career ending knee injury that forced his retirement after the 1984-85 season. Although his career ended with only 420 goals and 883 points, Barber’s number 7 was retired by the Flyers in 1990 after he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After his playing career, the coached the Hershey Bears and was the Flyers’ assistant coach from 1985-1988. He coached the Flyers farm team the Phantoms for 4 years where he won the team’s first Calder Cup in 1998. He won the Jack Adams Trophy in 2001 as the Flyers’ head coach. He was director of Player Personnel with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2002-2008 where he won the Stanley Cup in 2004. He returned to the Flyers in 2008 as a scouting consultant. Although Parent was a top netminder, the Flyers seeking more offense, traded Parent to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The trade proved beneficial to Parent as he got to share goaltender duties with his childhood hero Jacques Plante. Under Plante’s guidance, Parent became a better and more proficient goalie as he perfected the “stand-up style” he modeled after Plante. Bernie Parent left the Leafs to join the WHA and returned to the Philadelphia Flyers after just one season. His next two years in Philly proved to be the best of his career. He won back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 along with the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both seasons. Sadly, Bernie Parent’s career was cut short in 1979 when he took a stick to his right eye causing temporary blindness. Although his vision returned, there was permanent damage to his eye forcing his retirement. Parent remained with the Flyers for a number of years as goaltending coach. After the retirement of Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer was made captain of the Montreal Canadiens and the quick winger helped lead his team to the cup in both his years as captain. Unfortunately, Cournoyer had back pain and multiple surgeries that forced him to retire early in 1979. He ended his career 4th in the Canadiens all-time scoring behind Guy Lafleur, Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau. Internationally, Yvan Cournoyer represented Team Canada and he was part of the historic 1972 Summit Series, where he scored 3 goals including one in the final game. Yvan Cournoyer was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. He has been named to the list of the “100 Greatest Players in NHL History”. He was a goaltender and he played for the New York Rangers. Richter is known as one of the most successful American-born goalies. Mike Richter was drafted by the Rangers in 1985. He represented the United States in the World Junior Championships and then played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1985-1987 and the Rangers drafted him that year as well. Richter represented the United States in the World Junior Champion in 1986 as well as the World Champions and the 1988 Calgary Olympics before making his NHL debut with the Rangers in 1989 playoffs. Vanbiesbrouk was selected by the Florida Panthers which is why Richter had his first campaign as the team’s number one goalie. He posted a career best with 42 wins and a 2.57 goals-against-average. The Rangers also won the President Trophy for the second time in a row and Richter was named MVP of the NHL All Star Game. In 1994 Richter also helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup which would be their first since 1940. Richter continued to play and was considered a very successful goaltender. He was a goaltender and he played for the New York Rangers. Richter is known as one of the most successful American-born goalies. Mike Richter was drafted by the Rangers in 1985. He represented the United States in the World Junior Championships and then played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1985-1987 and the Rangers drafted him that year as well. Richter represented the United States in the World Junior Champion in 1986 as well as the World Champions and the 1988 Calgary Olympics before making his NHL debut with the Rangers in 1989 playoffs. Vanbiesbrouk was selected by the Florida Panthers which is why Richter had his first campaign as the team’s number one goalie. He posted a career best with 42 wins and a 2.57 goals-against-average. The Rangers also won the President Trophy for the second time in a row and Richter was named MVP of the NHL All Star Game. In 1994 Richter also helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup which would be their first since 1940. Richter continued to play and was considered a very successful goaltender. His last appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs was in 1997, after that he hurt his knee. Richter retired in 2003 and his number 35, was retired. Mike Richter was part of the class of 2008 in the U.S Hockey Hall of Fame due to his success. He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame. He made the NHL All-Star game and the 1985 NHL All-Rookie Team. In the 1985-86 season, Chelios would win his first Stanley Cup Championship. Chris Chelios was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks where he played from 1990-1999. He was captain of the Blackhawks from 1995-1999. He then went to play for the Detroit Red Wings where he played another decade, taking home 2 more Stanley Cups. He played 2 more seasons for the Atlanta Thrashers before officially retiring in 2010. During his long career, Chelios would make 11 All-Star appearances, and he was the winner of 3 James Norris Trophies. Not only did Chris Chelios have an outstanding NHL career, he also was a major player for the US team, playing in 2 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, 3 Canada Cups, 2 World Cups of Hockey where he was alternate captain and captain, and 4 Winter Olympics that he was named captain for 3. He retired from international play with the most games played for any country with 47. After retirement, Chelios was hired to work in the Red Wings front office.
