Federov could do it all: he had superior speed, excellent puck handling skills and was a gifted playmaker. He normally played as a forward but also could play defense if needed. He began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1990. He very quickly became a fan favorite with his extraordinary skills and high scoring. The 1993-1994 season was a career season for Federov where he scored 56 goals and 120 points. In the mid-nineties, Detroit coach Scotty Bowman put Federov on the Russian Five line with Vyacheslav Kozlov and Igor Larionov as wingers and Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov on defence. This highly effective line essential shut down the opposing teams’ offense and they played a leading role in the three Red Wings Stanley Cup Championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002. Sergei Federov won numerous NHL awards including the Hart Memorial Trophy for MVP (1994), the Lester B. Pearson Award, the Frank J. Selke Trophy and three Presidents Trophies with Detroit. He appeared in six All-Star games and was the winner of the skills competition for Fastest Skater in 1992 and 1994 and Hardest Shot in 2002. In his first season as captain of the Maple Leafs, he finished the season with 41 goals and 59 assists, the first Leaf ever to reach the one-hundred-point level. In the Canada Cup that year, he scored the winning goal for Team Canada in overtime. Sittler also set an NHL record for most points in one game which still stands. Due to a breakdown in communication with ownership and management of the Maple Leafs, Sittler requested to be traded. In 1982 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers where he played one season. Modano was a finalist for the 1990 Calder Trophy but lost out to Sergei Makarov. Prior to the 1993-1994 NHL Season the North Stars relocated to Dallas becoming the now known Dallas Stars. Modano finished with 93 points (50 Goals and 43 Asssits) becoming a hockey idol selling the most jerseys and receiving the most fan letters during that season. In 1999 Modano won the Stanley Cup while with a broken wrist that he suffered in game 2 against the Buffalo Sabres. Modano assisted on the Stars' final five goals of the series, including both in Game 5 and Game 6, and led the Stars with 23 points in the playoffs, with all seven in the finals on assists. Modano scored his 500th career regular-season goal on March 13, 2007. He is only the 14th goal scorer to score 500 goals with a single team and the 39th player to reach 500 goals overall. On March 17, 2007, in an away game versus the Nashville Predators Modano scored his 502nd and 503rd career regular-season goals in a 3–2 loss, thus passing Joe Mullen's NHL record (502) for most goals scored by an American-born player.
