Chara emigrated to North America from his native Slovakia at the age of 19 with one year remaining in junior eligibility to learn how to play hockey here with a smaller ice surface. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1996 Entry Draft and began playing on the team in the 1997-1998 season. Zdeno Chara is an excellent stay-at-home defenseman who at 6 foot 9 inches is the tallest player in the NHL. His tall stature makes him physically intimidating and he is known as a hard hitter. He has a powerful slapshot and his offensive numbers increase year over year. Chara spent four seasons with the Islanders and another five with the Ottawa Senators. Learn More about Tom Johnson: Tom Johnson was an NHL defenseman that played for the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins from 1947-1965. He became a starting player for the Canadiens in 1950 and impressed the coaching staff with his durability, speed, stickhandling and accurate passing skills. Tom Johnson’s talent was turning over the puck without physical contact with opposing forwards, leading to breakaways for his team. He was often switched to center if a goal was needed late in the game due to his ability to win faceoffs and accurately pass the puck. Tom Johnson was part of the Canadiens’ glory years winning the Stanley Cup Championship in 1953 and five consecutive cups from 1956-1960. Tom Johnson was left unprotected by the Habs following an eye injury that had the potential to end his career. He was picked up by the Boston Bruins where he played for 121 games before a skate severed the nerves in his leg forcing him into retirement. He remained with the Bruins front office staff after retirement and acted as assistant to the president and general manager. Tom Johnson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1970. He was the only goalie to go directly into the NHL without any college, major junior or professional experience. In his rookie year, he won both the Vezina Trophy as the leagues’ best netminder and the Calder Trophy as top rookie. He was also elected to the first All-Star Team. In 1988, Tom Barrasso was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins where he provided the defence needed to win two successive Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 and 1992. He became the first American born NHL goalie to win 300 games and finished his career with 369 wins. For the remainder of his career, Tom Barrasso played for the Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues. He signed a pro forma contract with Pittsburgh so he could official retire as a Penguin in 2003. After retirement, Barrasso was a goaltending coach and later an assistant coach for the Carolina Hurricanes. He is currently a head coach in Italy.
