Learn More about Igor Larionov: Igor Larionov is a Russian hockey center that played 29 years of professional hockey in both the Soviet League and the NHL. He was drafted into the NHL by the Vancouver Canucks in 1985 but he wasn’t allowed to join the Canucks until the 1989-1990 season when he was released by Sovietintersports who would draw a portion of Russian-NHL players’ salaries. Larionov played for 3 years in Vancouver and he steadily improved his North American game. By his third year, he was centering the Canucks top line with wingers Greg Adams and Pavel Bure. Larionov left North America to play in Switzerland for one year before returning to NHL to play for the San Jose Sharks where he served as alternate captain for the 1994-95 season. The following season, Igor Larionov was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where coach Scotty Bowman placed him on the highly effective “Russian Five” line. The Russian Five consisted of Viacheslav Fetisov, Sergei Fedorov, Vyacheslav Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov. They were an integral part of the Detroit’s back to back Stanley Cup Championships in 1997 and 1998. Larionov was traded to the Florida Panthers where he was reunited with Pavel Bure, however, he was traded back to the Red Wings before the season was over. It was with Detroit that he won his third Stanley Cup after scoring the game-winning goal in triple overtime of game 3. He played his final NHL season with the New Jersey Devils. Igor Larionov represented Team Russia at several events. He is one of only four players in the world to have won gold at the Olympics, World Championships, Stanley Cup, Canada/World Cup and the World Junior Championships. Ullman started his professional career in 1956 with the Detroit Red Wings. Ullman was known for his stick-handling, his stamina and consistency. He was centering the line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. Ullman's career statistics place him as one of the greatest centers in NHL history. He had 490 regular season goals, 739 assists and 1229 points. Ullman led the Red Wings in goals in 1961, 1965 and 1966 and led the league in 1964-65. That season Ullman missed the overall scoring by four points. He was second to Stan Mikita. That same season Ullman was voted a first team All-Star. Ullman appeared in 11 All-Star games in his twenty-year career. In 1968, in the middle of his thirteenth year with Detroit, Ullman was traded to the Leafs. Learn More about Eddie Giacomin: Ed Giacomin was an NHL goaltender that played during the Original Six Era from 1965 when he made it to the big league to 1978. He played for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Ed Giacomin overcame many obstacles on his journey to the NHL. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Giacomin spent his last three years as a player with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1978. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and his number 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989. Kölzig played with the Baltimore Skipjacks, Rochester Americans and Portland Pirates of the AHL. Olaf Kölzig also spent one year with the Hampton Roads Admiral of the East Coast Hockey League. When he was playing with the Portland Pirates Kölzig was awarded with the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy and the Hap Holmes Memorial Award. In 1995-96, the Capitals recalled him as their back-up for Jim Carey. In 1996-97, the Capitals acquired Bill Ranford and Kölzig stayed as a back-up goaltender. In early 1997 Ranford suffered an injury and Kölzig took over doing quite well, playing 33 games with a 2.20 goals against average. In 2000 Kölzig won the Vezina Trophy. Kölzig played with the Capitals until 2008 when he signed a contract with Tampa Bay. Kölzig got injured and he could not play through the entire season. In 2009 Kölzig announced his retirement.
