Learn More about Bob Gainey: Bob Gainey played 16 seasons in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and was known as one of the best defensive forwards and all-around players of his time. His combination of speed, determination, and physical play earned him four consecutive Frank J. Selke Trophies as the league’s best defensive forward from 1976-1979, the same years he helped lead his team to four Stanley Cup Championships. In 1982, Bob Gainey succeeded Serge Savard and became Captain of the Montreal Canadiens. In 1986, he won his fifth career Stanley Cup and he announced his retirement the following year. In all, Bob Gainey finished his career after 1160 regular season games with 239 goals and 263 assists. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. After his retirement as a player, Bob Gainey went on to coach the Minnesota North Stars and also became the team’s general manager. He received another Stanley Cup as GM of the Dallas Stars in 1999. Known for his hard hits, Baun played for the Leafs for 11 seasons winning the Stanley Cup in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967. Baun is best remembered for his performance in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1963-64 season. During the 1967 Expansion Draft, Bobby Baun was selected by the Oakland Seals. Following a disasterous season with the dead last Seals, Baun requested a trade back to an Original Six team. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year.
