During a Rangers game vs. the Montreal Canadiens, Bathgate took a slapshot that hit goaltender Jacques Plante in the face which required stitches.  When he returned to the game, Plante wore the first goalie mask in an NHL game. In the 1963-64 season, Andy Bathgate was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup.  The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals.  He also played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where they won two consecutive Lester Patrick Cups. In 1978, Andy Bathgate was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame.  On February 22, 2009, Andy Bathgate’s #9 was raised to the rafters by the New York Rangers.  Sadly, Mr. Bathgate passed away in 2016 at the age of 83. Although, Parent was a top net minder, the Flyers seeking more offense traded Parent to the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The trade proved beneficial to Parent as he got to share goaltender duties with his childhood hero Jacques Plante.  Under Plante’s guidance, Parent became a better and more proficient goalie as he perfected the “stand-up style” he modeled after Plante. Bernie Parent left the Leafs to join the WHA and returned to the Philadelphia Flyers after just one season.  His next two years in Philly proved to be the best of his career.  He won back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 along with the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both seasons.  Sadly, Bernie Parent’s career was cut short in 1979 when he took as stick to his right eye causing temporary blindness.  Although his vision returned, there was permanent damage to his eye forcing his retirement.  Parent remained with the Flyers for a number of years as goaltending coach.
