Adam Oates was a first-line centre with the St. Louis Blues playing alongside superstar Brent Hull. Adam Oates is the only person in NHL history to centre 50 goals scorers with him assisting Hull, Cam Neely and Peter Bondra. Not only was Oates great at setting goals into motion with a career total of 1079 assists at the time of his retirement (5th in the league). He was also a consistent goal scorer himself reaching the 20-goal mark five times with a career high 45 goals. Learn More about Billy Smith: Billy Smith was chosen 59th overall in the fifth round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft Pick by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup. Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team. For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975. In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game. For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch. During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team. Billy Smith won the Vezina Trophy and became a First Team All-Star in 1982 and won the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Smith was also credited as being the first goalie to score an NHL goal. He retired in 1989 and was the only original Islander left on the team at that point. His number (31) was retired on February 20th, 1993, and he became the only goalie to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame during the 1990’s later in that year. Learn More about Grant Fuhr: Grant Fuhr was a NHL goaltender drafted eighth overall in the 1981 Entry draft by the Edmonton Oilers. He played ten seasons with the Oilers and won the Stanley Cup four times with them from 1983-1987. In 1987 he also played in the NHL All-Stars Rendezvous series and in the 1987-19 88 season's Canada Cup to secure a win for his team. That same year he won both the Vezina Trophy for best goalie and the Hart Memorial Trophy for league MVP. He also played in the All-Star games from 1984-1986 as well as 1988 and 1989. In 1991 Fuhr was traded to Toronto and then again to Buffalo. In 1993-1994 he had a successful season that resulted in a William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. He was then traded to the Los Angeles Kings though he did not have another successful season until he signed as a free agent in St Louis for the 1995-1996 campaign. He achieved two league records that season for games in a season (79) and consecutive games (76). Fuhr did not complete the playoffs due to tearing three knee ligaments; he never recovered fully from the injury. From 1999-2001 he served as the mentor for younger players on the Calgary Flames before retiring. Fuhr was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He was the only goalie to go directly into the NHL without any college, major junior or professional experience. In 1988, Tom Barrasso was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins where he provided the defence needed to win two successive Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 and 1992. He became the first American born NHL goalie to win 300 games and finished his career with 369 wins. For the remainder of his career, Tom Barrasso played for the Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues. He signed a pro forma contract with Pittsburgh so he could official retire as a Penguin in 2003. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. He played 3 seasons with the Canucks before being traded to the Boston Bruins. Neely joining the Bruins was turning point in his career where he was given more opportunity to play and a chance to contribute offensively, not just physically. His first full season following the trade, Neely led the club with 36 goals and finishing the season with 72 points, more than doubling his previous year’s performance. Neely’s success stemmed from not only his quick, powerful shots on goal but his also his physical play and devastating body checks. He became a power forward for the Bruins and earned the nickname “Bam-Bam Cam.” His first season with the Bruins ended with 143 minutes in the penalty box. Sadly, Neely’s career was cut short due to repeated knee injuries and a degenerative hip condition at the age of 31. However, he did have some remarkable scoring achievements. Only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull scored a better goals per game average over the course of a season. He reached the 50 goal mark 3 times and played in 5 All-Star Games. His intense effort to return to the NHL despite the injuries earned him a Masterson Trophy and the Boston Bruins honored him by raising his number 8 to the rafters on January 12, 2004.

Modano scored his 500th career regular-season goal on March 13, 2007. He is only the 14th goal scorer to score 500 goals with a single team and the 39th player to reach 500 goals overall. On March 17, 2007, in an away game versus the Nashville Predators Modano scored his 502nd and 503rd career regular-season goals in a 3–2 loss, thus passing Joe Mullen's NHL record (502) for most goals scored by an American-born player. Lindsay played three seasons with the Blackhawks but wanted to retire a Red Wing so his last season in 1964-65 he played for Detroit. Learn More about Andy Bathgate: Andy Bathgate was an elite right winger and top NHL goal scorer that played predominantly for the New York Rangers as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He entered the NHL in 1952 despite a horrific knee injury suffered in minor leagues and played all but 5 games in 11 seasons for the Rangers. He was an excellent skater, easily weaving his way through the opposing team and he had one of the hardest shots in the league. During a Rangers game vs. the Montreal Canadiens, Bathgate took a slapshot that hit goaltender Jacques Plante in the face which required stitches. When he returned to the game, Plante wore the first goalie mask in an NHL game. In the 1963-64 season, Andy Bathgate was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals. He also played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where they won two consecutive Lester Patrick Cups. In 1978, Andy Bathgate was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On February 22, 2009, Andy Bathgate’s #9 was raised to the rafters by the New York Rangers. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Don Cherry is a strong support of tough “Canadian” type hockey that encourages fighting and physical play. Cherry had his own video series, Don Cherry’s Rock Em’, Sock Em Hockey that included hockey highlights and his trademark banter.
