Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Don Cherry is a strong support of tough “Canadian” type hockey that encourages fighting and physical play. Evgeni Malkin began his career with his hometown club in Russia called Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Evgeni Malkin was drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2004 NHL Draft. Evgeni Malkin began playing for the Penguins in the 2006-07 season.
Evgeni Malkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year in 2006-07. In his second season with the club he helped lead the Penguins to the 2008 Stanley Cup final and was the runner up for the Hart Memorial Trophy. In the 2008-09 season, Malkin was awarded the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer. Learn More about Grant Fuhr: Grant Fuhr was a NHL goaltender drafted eighth overall in the 1981 Entry draft by the Edmonton Oilers. He played ten seasons with the Oilers and won the Stanley Cup four times with them from 1983-1987. In 1987 he also played in the NHL All-Stars Rendezvous series and in the 1987-19 88 season's Canada Cup to secure a win for his team. That same year he won both the Vezina Trophy for best goalie and the Hart Memorial Trophy for league MVP. He also played in the All-Star games from 1984-1986 as well as 1988 and 1989. In 1991 Fuhr was traded to Toronto and then again to Buffalo. In 1993-1994 he had a successful season that resulted in a William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. He was then traded to the Los Angeles Kings though he did not have another successful season until he signed as a free agent in St Louis for the 1995-1996 campaign. He achieved two league records that season for games in a season (79) and consecutive games (76). Fuhr did not complete the playoffs due to tearing three knee ligaments; he never recovered fully from the injury. From 1999-2001 he served as the mentor for younger players on the Calgary Flames before retiring. Fuhr was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season, he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames.
