Learn More about Adam Oates: Adam Oates was an NHL center and elite playmaker that was active in the NHL from 1985-2004. He played for several teams throughout his hockey career including the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Edmonton Oilers. Adam Oates was a first-line centre with the St. Louis Blues playing alongside superstar Brent Hull. The duo dubbed “Hull and Oates” put up prolific numbers in their two and a half seasons together with Hull scoring 86 goals one season and Oates with 115 points. Adam Oates is the only person in NHL history to centre 50 goals scorers with him assisting Hull, Cam Neely and Peter Bondra. Not only was Oates great at setting goals into motion with a career total of 1079 assists at the time of his retirement (5th in the league). He was also a consistent goal scorer himself reaching the 20-goal mark five times with a career high 45 goals. Although Adam Oates never won a Stanley Cup Championship throughout his 19 year career in the NHL, he did lead the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup Finals in franchise history in 1998. Learn More about Rick Middleton: Rick Middleton was a right winger that played in the NHL from 1974-1988 for the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. His record 105 points in the 1983-1984 season tied Ken Hodges for most points by a right winger for the Boston franchise. He retired from hockey after 1005 regular season games and 988 points. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. In the late 1950s Lindsay also helped organize the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA). This was a huge factor to Ted Lindsay being traded to the Blackhawks. Lindsay played three seasons with the Blackhawks but wanted to retire a Red Wing so his last season in 1964-65 he played for Detroit. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season, he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played for the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Leach was originally drafted by Boston in 1970. He played two seasons with them but was traded along with Rick Smith and Bob Stewart to California. After playing three seasons with California, Leach was traded to Philadelphia for Larry Wright, Al MacAdam and Ron Chipperfield in 1974. Leach won the Stanley Cup with Philadelphia in the 1974-75 season. After a few seasons with Philadelphia, Leach played his last season with the Red Wings then retired. Leach's best season was 1975-1976 with the Flyers. He set a career high with 61 goals 91 points and 11 game winning goals. His 61 goals won Leach what is now known as the Richard Trophy and he also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that season. Vanbiesbrouck also played on an international level with the United States many times. He played in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in 1982 and played at four IIHF World Championships. Learn More about Billy Smith: Billy Smith was chosen 59th overall in the fifth round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft Pick by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup. Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team. For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975. In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game. For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch. During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team.
