Learn More about Billy Smith: Billy Smith was chosen 59th overall in the fifth round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft Pick by the Los Angeles Kings. He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup. Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team. For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975. In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game. For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch. During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team. Billy Smith won the Vezina Trophy and became a First Team All-Star in 1982 and won the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Smith was also credited as being the first goalie to score an NHL goal. He retired in 1989 and was the only original Islander left on the team at that point. His number (31) was retired on February 20th, 1993, and he became the only goalie to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame during the 1990’s later in that year. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. In 1954, he returned to the New York Rangers as a starting goaltender beating out future star Johnny Bower for the op spot. Gump Worsley spent nine seasons with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1963. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the play-offs with 11 straight wins. Worsley retired in the middle of the 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shut out. Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44. He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask. Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played. He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and a goals against average of 2.91. Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980. Elmer Lach was a gifted player that had superior speed and passing ability. He was a tough competitor that wasn’t afraid to fight for the puck. Although he sustained many injuries through his career, he often tried to hide it to stay in the game. Lach retired after the 1953-1954 season as the league's all-time leading scorer, having played 664 regular season games, scoring 215 goals and 408 assists for 623 points. After retirement Elmer Lach coached the Montreal Junior Canadiens and the Montreal Royals for two seasons. Elmer Lach was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and his number 16 was retired a second time by the Canadiens (the first time it was retired for Henri Richard). The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals.
