Learn More About Ted Lindsay: Ted Lindsay was a professional ice hockey player who played forward for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.  He was a fierce competitor that earned the nickname “Terrible Ted” because of his rough and tough style of play, causing the NHL to create new penalties such as elbowing.  Despite his time spent in the penalty box, Ted Lindsay was a great player who scored over 800 points during his Hall of Fame career.  Lindsay also won four Stanley cups with the Detroit Red Wings and was named in the first group of NHL's 100 greatest Players in 2017. Ted Lindsay’s first season was in 1944 when he was 19.  He first played for Detroit and was part of the high scoring “Production Line” with Sid Abel and superstar Gordie Howe.  In the 1949-1950 season, Lindsay won the Art Ross Trophy for leading the league in points during the regular and played a large role in his team winning the Stanley Cup.  In the late 1950s Lindsay also helped organize the National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA).  This was a huge factor to Ted Lindsay being traded to the Blackhawks.  Lindsay played three seasons with the Blackhawks but wanted to retire a Red Wing so his last season in 1964-65 he played for Detroit. Ted Lindsay was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.  Also, Ted Lindsay's #7 was retired by the Detroit Red Wings in 1991. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974.  He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.”  He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year.  He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games.  Don Cherry is a strong support of tough “Canadian” type hockey that encourages fighting and physical play.  Cherry had his own video series, Don Cherry’s Rock Em’, Sock Em Hockey that included hockey highlights and his trademark banter.  He is also the owner of a successful chain of restaurants as well as an owner of the Mississauga Ice Dogs. He won the Calder Memorial trophy and was the Rookie of the Year, in 1952, when he joined the NHL and played for the New York Rangers.  In 1954 he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where he won Most Valuable Player.  In 1954, he returned to the New York Rangers as a starting goaltender beating out future star Johnny Bower for the op spot.  Gump Worsley spent nine seasons with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1963. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969.  In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the play-offs with 11 straight wins.  Worsley retired in the middle of the 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shut out.  Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44.  He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask.  Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played.  He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and a goals against average of 2.91.  Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980.  Sadly, Gump Worsley passed away from a heart attack in 2007.
