Pilote was an outstanding defenseman, winning 3 Norris Trophies and being the runner up another 3 times. Pierre Pilote was paired with teammate Elmer ‘Moose’ Vasko and was one of the best all-time defense pairings. Pilote was a great offensive defenseman, often carrying the puck up the ice. The Hawks had floundered for years prior to Pilote's arrival. But with the likes of Pilote, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Glenn Hall, the Chicago Blackhawks became Stanley Cup champions in 1961. Pilote scored the winning or tying goal in every Blackhawks victory that season. Although 1961 pre-dated the Conn Smythe Trophy, Pierre Pilote was the obvious playoff MVP for the Hawks. His 15 points led all players in the Stanley Cup playoffs that year.. The following season Pierre Pilote became the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Pilote retired from hockey in 1969 after one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pierre Pilote's great career was recognized in 1975 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Known for his outstanding speed he was nicknamed “The Russian Rocket.” He made his NHL debut in 1991 and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year, finishing the season with 34 goals and 60 points in 65 games. His rookie year was followed by two consecutive 60 point seasons. Pavel Bure was traded to the Florida in 1999 and in his first two full seasons with the franchise, Bure led the league in scoring, capturing two back to back Rocket Richard Trophies. Bure was traded to the New York Rangers on March 18, 2002. Unfortunately, a series of knee injuries left him unable to play and he announced his retirement in 2005. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. He began his career coaching at the varsity and junior levels in 1977. He led the Oshawa Legionaries to back to back championships in 1979 and 1980. Mike Keenan moved on to coaching the Rochester Americans to the AHL championship in 1983. The following year, Keenan got his first high profile coaching job, coaching the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. He played right wing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes. With these teams Gartner played a total of 19 seasons. Gartner was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1979 and made his debut that year in October against the Buffalo Sabres. 1979-1980 was a solid season for Gartner. When Gartner was traded in 1989, he left Washington as the all-time leader in career goals, assists and points. As of 2017, Gartner is third in goals and points and fourth in assists. Despite Gartner being a skillful player, he only lasted one season with Minnesota before he was traded to the Rangers. Gartner scored 11 goals and 16 points in the remaining 12 regular season games. The next season, 1990-1991, Gartner became the first player to reach his 500th goal, 500th assist and 100th point all in one season. The next season he became the first Ranger to score at least 40 goals in 3 consecutive seasons. Gartner was traded again in 1993-1994 to the Leafs. Learn More about Mark Howe: Mark Howe was a professional hockey player that played in both the WHA and the NHL for 22 seasons. He is the son of the legendary Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe and brother of Marty Howe. Mark played left wing for the Houston Aeros of the WHA as linemate to his brother Marty and father Gordie who came out of retirement to play alongside his two sons. The Howes led their team to the 1974 and 1975 Avco Cups—the WHA version of the Stanley Cup. Mark also won the Lou Kaplan Trophy as Rookie of the Year. The Howe family moved to the New England Whalers which became the Hartford Whalers when the WHA and NHL merged. The Howes played one more season together in the NHL. Mark Howe was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1982 and by then he had become a full-time defenseman. The 1985-1986 season was a career season for Mark where he put up some of the best numbers ever by an NHL defenseman with 24 goals and 58 assists for 82 points. Despite Mark Howe’s contribution, the injury-riddled Flyers were not playoff contenders. After the 1991-1992 season, Mark Howe signed with the Detroit Red Wings, his father’s former team in the hopes of winning a Stanley Cup.
