Ciccarelli signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1979. He was called up from the minors for the latter half of the 1980-1981 season where he played in 32 games scoring 18 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He left Minnesota in March of 1989 in a trade to the Washington Capitals. He had 651 points with the North Stars, 4th in club history. Dino Ciccarelli spent the rest of his career with shorter stints with the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. His gritty “in-your-face” style of hockey helped inspire his team and provided a veteran presence with his later teams. Upon his retirement in 1999, Ciccarelli had played in 1232 regular season games with 608 goals and 592 assists for 1200 points. He was ranked ninth in scoring in NHL history. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. Ciccarelli signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1979. He was called up from the minors for the latter half of the 1980-1981 season where he played in 32 games scoring 18 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He left Minnesota in March of 1989 in a trade to the Washington Capitals. He had 651 points with the North Stars, 4th in club history. Dino Ciccarelli spent the rest of his career with shorter stints with the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. His gritty “in-your-face” style of hockey helped inspire his team and provided a veteran presence with his later teams. Upon his retirement in 1999, Ciccarelli had played in 1232 regular season games with 608 goals and 592 assists for 1200 points. He was ranked ninth in scoring in NHL history.
