He led his team to 5 first place finishes in the regular season and the Stanley Cup Championship in 1997, 1998 and 2002. The 1997 Championship was the first Stanley Cup for Detroit in 42 years. Steve Yzerman won a number of awards during his career including the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1988/89 for Most Outstanding Player, Conn Smythe Trophy for MVP of the Playoffs, and the Selke Trophy for best defensive forward. He was named to 10 All-Star teams including the First Team All-Star in 2000. Yzerman retired sixth for all-time leading scorer in in NHL history. He is first in assists in Red Wings history and second in points and goals. His #19 jersey was officially retired by the Detroit Red Wings and he was inducted to both the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Internationally, Steve Yzerman represented Team Canada, winning an Olympic gold medal in 2002. Post retirement, Yzerman was GM of Team Canada for the 2007 IIHK World Championship, Executive Director of Team Canada for the 2010 & 2014 Winter Olympics (winning Gold medals for both). Learn More about Theoren "Theo" Fleury: Theo Fleury is a right winger that played in the NHL from 1988-2006 after being drafted in 1987 by the Calgary Flames. He played in over 1000 NHL games and had a career high 1088 points. He helped lead his Calgary Flames to the franchise's first Stanley Cup Championship in 1989. Theo Fleury's small size led to many doubts about him making it to the NHL but he developed his own unpredictable style of aggressive hockey where he intimidated his opponents with his fiesty physical game. He racked up many penalty minutes. Theo Fleury was a leading goal scorer and held the franchise record until it was broken by Jarome Iginla in 2009. Internationally, Theo Fleury represented Team Canada and in 2002 won the Olympic Gold medal with Canada's Dream Team managed by Wayne Gretzky. Calgary's small market led to his traded from the Flames to Colorado, and then the NY Rangers and finally the Chicago Blackhawks. Due to personal issues, Theo Fleury was suspended by the NHL in 2003. He did stage a comeback bid in 2009 playing in 4 exhibition games for the Calgary Flames but was not signed to a contract. Theo Fleury was satisfied that he would end his career in a Calgary uniform, he announced his retirement in 2009. Learn More about Vic Hadfield: Vic Hadfield made it to the NHL as a rugged enforcer for the New York Rangers in 1959. He posted triple digit penalty numbers and led the league in 1963-1964 with 151 penalty minutes. As Hadfield’s career progressed with the Rangers, he was put on the same line with Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. This line would become known as the Goal a Game line and Hadfield’s focuses shifted scoring. Vic Hadfield was an example of one player doing it all as his points totals came closer to matching his penalty minutes. In 1971-1972, he had his career best season with 50 goals, 106 points and 142 PIM. He became captain of the New York Rangers the following season and was also chosen to play in the 1972 Summit Series. Hadfield was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the start of the 1974 season where he played for 2 seasons before a knee injury ended his career. Learn more about Wendel Clark here: Wendel Clark was selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft and was converted from defenseman to forward. He quickly became known for his hard hitting hockey, refusing to back down to the toughest players in the league. He racked up 227 PIM during his rookie season and earned himself the nickname Captain Crunch. Clark was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team and finished third in voting for the Calder Memorial Trophy. Clark spent most of his career in the NHL as a Toronto Maple Leaf, and was named captain of the Leafs for the 1991-92 season. The following year, Clark led his team into a playoff spot for the first time in 3 years and the Leafs set team records with 44 wins and 99 points. The Toronto Maple Leafs advanced to the 3rd round against Wayne Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings with Clark getting a hat trick in Game 6 of the series. Although Wendel Clark was traded to the Quebec Noridiques in a multiplayer deal for Mats Sundin, he came back to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1995-1998 and again for his final NHL season in 1999-2000. On November 22, 2008, the Toronto Maple Leafs honoured their former captain by raising his number 17 to the rafters at the Air Canada Centre.
