Learn More About Mike Gartner: Mike Gartner is a retired ice hockey player.  He played right wing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes.  With these teams Gartner played a total of 19 seasons. Gartner was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1979 and made his debut that year in October against the Buffalo Sabres.  1979-1980 was a solid season for Gartner.  When Gartner was traded in 1989, he left Washington as the all-time leader in career goals, assists and points.  As of 2017, Gartner is third in goals and points and fourth in assists. Despite Gartner being a skillful player, he only lasted one season with Minnesota before he was traded to the Rangers.  Gartner scored 11 goals and 16 points in the remaining 12 regular season games.  The next season, 1990-1991, Gartner became the first player to reach his 500th goal, 500th assist and 100th point all in one season.  The next season he became the first Ranger to score at least 40 goals in 3 consecutive seasons.  Gartner was traded again in 1993-1994 to the Leafs.  He played with them until 1996 when he was traded to the Coyotes before he retired, two seasons later.
