Learn More about Lou Fontinato: Leapin’ Louie Fontinato was an NHL defenceman that played for the New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens from 1954-1963. He was a rugged enforcer that led the league in penalty minutes with 202. Fontinato had a long running feud with Gordie Howe which culminated in a fight where Howe broke Fontinato’s nose and dislocated his jaw. Howe described the fight as one of the most memorable of his career. Lou Fontinato was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he spent two more seasons before he suffered a career ending injury after colliding head first into the boards on a missed check. He was paralyzed for a month and did not regain feeling in his arms for four months. Lou Fontinato passed away on July 3, 2016 at the age of 84.
