Pronovost was started out coaching the Windsor Spitfires but during the 1972-1973 season, Pronovost was head coach of the Chicago Cougars in the WHA. Professionally, Pronovost coached 104 games for the Buffalo Sabres and briefly he was an associate coach of the Red Wings. After his coaching career, Marcel Pronovost worked for the NHL Central Scouting Bureau but in 1990 he was hired as a scout for the New Jersey Devils. Marcel Pronovost was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player in 1978.
