He was a goaltender and he played for the New York Rangers. Richter is known as one of the most successful American-born goalies. Mike Richter was drafted by the Rangers in 1985. He represented the United States in the World Junior Championships and then played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1985-1987 and the Rangers drafted him that year as well. Richter represented the United States in the World Junior Champion in 1986 as well as the World Champions and the 1988 Calgary Olympics before making his NHL debut with the Rangers in 1989 playoffs. Vanbiesbrouk was selected by the Florida Panthers which is why Richter had his first campaign as the team’s number one goalie. He posted a career best with 42 wins and a 2.57 goals-against-average. The Rangers also won the President Trophy for the second time in a row and Richter was named MVP of the NHL All Star Game. In 1994 Richter also helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup which would be their first since 1940. Richter continued to play and was considered a very successful goaltender. His last appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs was in 1997, after that he hurt his knee. Richter retired in 2003 and his number 35, was retired.
