He was a goaltender and he played for the New York Rangers. Richter is known as one of the most successful American-born goalies. Mike Richter was drafted by the Rangers in 1985. He represented the United States in the World Junior Championships and then played for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1985-1987 and the Rangers drafted him that year as well. Richter represented the United States in the World Junior Champion in 1986 as well as the World Champions and the 1988 Calgary Olympics before making his NHL debut with the Rangers in 1989 playoffs. Vanbiesbrouk was selected by the Florida Panthers which is why Richter had his first campaign as the team’s number one goalie. He posted a career best with 42 wins and a 2.57 goals-against-average. The Rangers also won the President Trophy for the second time in a row and Richter was named MVP of the NHL All Star Game. In 1994 Richter also helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup which would be their first since 1940. Richter continued to play and was considered a very successful goaltender. His last appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs was in 1997, after that he hurt his knee. Richter retired in 2003 and his number 35, was retired. Known as one of the most gifted playmakers of all time, Perreault was the center of the high scoring “French Connection” line, with wingers Rick Martin and Rene Roberts. Gilbert Perreault was not only a gifted stickhandler but a gentleman on the ice, winning the Lady Byng Trophy in 1973. Internationally, Perreault was a part of Team Canada and played in the 1972 Summit Series. After his retirement as a player, he was inducted into the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990. The same year, his number 11 was the first number retired by the Sabres and Perreault was the only Sabre to ever wear #11. He announced his retirement on September 6, 1999. His first full season following the trade, Neely led the club with 36 goals and finishing the season with 72 points, more than doubling his previous year’s performance. Neely’s success stemmed from not only his quick, powerful shots on goal but his also his physical play and devastating body checks. He became a power forward for the Bruins and earned the nickname “Bam-Bam Cam.” His first season with the Bruins ended with 143 minutes in the penalty box. Sadly, Neely’s career was cut short due to repeated knee injuries and a degenerative hip condition at the age of 31. However, he did have some remarkable scoring achievements. Only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull scored a better goals per game average over the course of a season. He reached the 50 goal mark 3 times and played in 5 All-Star Games. His intense effort to return to the NHL despite the injuries earned him a Masterson Trophy and the Boston Bruins honored him by raising his number 8 to the rafters on January 12, 2004.

He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame. He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame. Cliff Fletcher, who drafted him into the NHL, described Nieuwendyk as being a "pre-eminent two-way guy who had 50-goal seasons", adding that "he had a great stick around the net, he had a great shot, he saw the ice well, he could skate, he had the size – he had everything you needed to have. History has indicated that wherever he went, the team was competitive. The more that was on the line in big games, the better Joe played." He was an offensive centre in Calgary and power play specialist, able to withstand the physical punishment required to stand in front of the net and battle defencemen for the puck. Lanny McDonald is a retired NHL winger that spent 16 seasons playing professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and the Calgary Flames. During his career, McDonald scored 500 goals and accumulated over 1000 points. The offensive forward had 3 consecutive 40 goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979. The deal was met with fan protests outside Maple Leaf Gardens. Lanny McDonald was named captain of the Rockies where he only played in one full season before he was again traded. This time he went to his hometown Calgary Flames where he would play for the rest of his career. Playing for the Calgary Flames, Lanny McDonald had some of the best years of his career. The 1982-83 season saw McDonald battling Wayne Gretzky for top goal scorer in the league. He finished the season with 66 goals, just 5 goals behind superstar Gretzky’s total of 71. His 66 goals still stand as highest number of goals in a single season for the Calgary Flames organization. He received the Bill Masterson Trophy for “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He ended his career on a high note, winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. His jersey number 9, was the first to be retired by the Calgary Flames. As well, Lanny McDonald was the first Calgary Flame to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. Learn More About Cam Neely: Cam Neely was a right winger that was drafted into the NHL by the Vancouver Canucks in 1983, ninth overall. He played 3 seasons with the Canucks before being traded to the Boston Bruins. Neely joining the Bruins was turning point in his career where he was given more opportunity to play and a chance to contribute offensively, not just physically. His first full season following the trade, Neely led the club with 36 goals and finishing the season with 72 points, more than doubling his previous year’s performance. Neely’s success stemmed from not only his quick, powerful shots on goal but his also his physical play and devastating body checks. He became a power forward for the Bruins and earned the nickname “Bam-Bam Cam.” His first season with the Bruins ended with 143 minutes in the penalty box. Sadly, Neely’s career was cut short due to repeated knee injuries and a degenerative hip condition at the age of 31. However, he did have some remarkable scoring achievements. Only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull scored a better goals per game average over the course of a season. He reached the 50 goal mark 3 times and played in 5 All-Star Games. His intense effort to return to the NHL despite the injuries earned him a Masterson Trophy and the Boston Bruins honored him by raising his number 8 to the rafters on January 12, 2004.
