Ron Hextall played his first four NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. A combination of injures and suspensions let Hextall to be traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1992 as part of the Eric Lindros trade when Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques who drafted him first overall in the 1991 Entry Draft. Hextall helped the Nordiques reach the playoffs and was again traded the following season to the New York Islander where he played one season before being sent back to the Flyers. Hextall helped the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. At the end of the 1998-1998 season, Hextall was waived by the Flyers and went undrafted in the expansion draft. He announced his retirement on September 6, 1999. After his retirement as a player, Ron Hextall became a Flyers scout and eventually worked his way up to General Manger of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2014. Learn More about Rick Middleton: Rick Middleton was a right winger that played in the NHL from 1974-1988 for the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. His record 105 points in the 1983-1984 season tied Ken Hodges for most points by a right winger for the Boston franchise. He retired from hockey after 1005 regular season games and 988 points. Kelly was a great asset to the Red Wings, in his 12 years with the organization they won 8 regular season championships, four Stanley Cups and was chosen First Team All-Star defenceman six times. He won the James Norris Memorial Trophy for NHL top defenceman and 3 Lady Byng Trophies for the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. After an ankle injury, Red Kelly was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Red Kelly became full-time center for the Maple Leafs to play him against Montreal’s Jean Beliveau. Playing alongside goal scorer Frank Mahovlich, the Toronto Maple Leafs won 4 Stanley Cups in Kelly’s 8 seasons on the team. Red Kelly decided to retire on a high note, ending his playing career after winning his eighth Stanley Cup in 1967. Learn More about Ray Bourque: Ray Bourque was drafted 8th overall in 1979 by the Boston Bruins, for which he played for 21 seasons as a defenceman. Bourque made an immediate impact with the Bruins during his rookie season. He was known as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, not only for his defensive skills but also for his ability to score goals. He finished his rookie season with 65 points, a record for a rookie defenceman at the time. He won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the year and a First Team All-Star selection. In 1985, Bourque and Rick Middleton were made co-captains for the Bruins. Bourque would wear the “C” to away games, while Middleton would captain at home. After Middleton retired in 1988, Bourque became sole captain of the Boston Bruins and would hold the position throughout his tenure with the team, becoming the longest serving team captain in NHL history. Despite Bourque’s achievements and success during his 21 seasons with the Boston Bruins, his team had fallen short of a Stanley Cup win. The Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in both 1988 and 1990, where they were defeated both times to the Edmonton Oilers. The 1990 were difficult years for the Bruins and Bourque requested a trade during the 1999-2000 seasons when the Bruins fell to last place in their division. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, in the hopes of capturing the elusive Cup. Ray Bourque arrived in Colorado and quickly became a positive force both on and off the ice, helping to improve his team and capturing the division title. Unfortunately, they were defeated in Game 7 of the Conference final by the Dallas Stars. Bourque returned for his only full season with Colorado where he was named alternate captain. After 22 seasons in the NHL, Ray Bourque and his Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in Game 7 against the New Jersey Devils. After team captain, Joe Sakic, took the Cup, he immediately handed it to Bourque (without hoisting it), so Bourque could take the first victory lap around the ice. Bourque had waited longer than any other player who won Cup in NHL history having played 1612 regular season and 214 play-off games before winning his Stanley Cup. He announced his retirement shortly after and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004. His number 77 was retired by both the Boston Bruins and the Colorado Avalanche making him one of 6 players to have his number retired by more than one club. The Hawks had floundered for years prior to Pilote's arrival. But with the likes of Pilote, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Glenn Hall, the Chicago Blackhawks became Stanley Cup champions in 1961. Pilote scored the winning or tying goal in every Blackhawks victory that season. Although 1961 pre-dated the Conn Smythe Trophy, Pierre Pilote was the obvious playoff MVP for the Hawks. His 15 points led all players in the Stanley Cup playoffs that year.. The following season Pierre Pilote became the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Pilote retired from hockey in 1969 after one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pierre Pilote's great career was recognized in 1975 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He retired having played 890 regular season NHL games, in which he scored 80 goals, 418 assists and 498 points. The Chicago Blackhawks retired the number “3” worn by Pierre Pilote and the late Keith Magnuson in a joint ceremony in 2008. He played his first seven years with the Canadiens and won 4 consecutive Stanley Cups from 1957-59. Phil Goyette was traded to the New York Rangers where the skilled playmaker continued to improve his game and increase his numbers. 1969 was a career season for Goyette as he joined the St. Louis Blues and put up 78 points in the regular season. Learn More about Pavel Bure: Pavel Bure is an NHL Hall of Famer that spent 12 seasons playing right wing for the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Known for his outstanding speed he was nicknamed “The Russian Rocket.” He made his NHL debut in 1991 and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year, finishing the season with 34 goals and 60 points in 65 games. His rookie year was followed by two consecutive 60 point seasons. Pavel Bure was traded to the Florida in 1999 and in his first two full seasons with the franchise, Bure led the league in scoring, capturing two back to back Rocket Richard Trophies. Bure was traded to the New York Rangers on March 18, 2002. Unfortunately, a series of knee injuries left him unable to play and he announced his retirement in 2005. Bure was voted in on June 27, 2012, alongside Joe Sakic, Adam Oates and Mats Sundin. The Canucks retired Bure's #10 jersey on November 2, 2013.
