Chara emigrated to North America from his native Slovakia at the age of 19 with one year remaining in junior eligibility to learn how to play hockey here with a smaller ice surface. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1996 Entry Draft and began playing on the team in the 1997-1998 season. Zdeno Chara is an excellent stay-at-home defenseman who at 6 foot 9 inches is the tallest player in the NHL. His tall stature makes him physically intimidating and he is known as a hard hitter. He has a powerful slapshot and his offensive numbers increase year over year. Chara spent four seasons with the Islanders and another five with the Ottawa Senators. The Sens recognized his growing skills as he turned into an elite defenseman. In 2006, Zdeno Chara joined the Boston Bruins and was made captain. He quickly became known for his hard hitting hockey, refusing to back down to the toughest players in the league. He racked up 227 PIM during his rookie season and earned himself the nickname Captain Crunch. Clark was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team and finished third in voting for the Calder Memorial Trophy. Clark spent most of his career in the NHL as a Toronto Maple Leaf, and was named captain of the Leafs for the 1991-92 season. The following year, Clark led his team into a playoff spot for the first time in 3 years and the Leafs set team records with 44 wins and 99 points. The Toronto Maple Leafs advanced to the 3rd round against Wayne Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings with Clark getting a hat trick in Game 6 of the series.
