He was a goaltender that played for the New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Kirk McLean was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 1984. He debuted with the Devils in 1985-1986 before being called to Oshawa. McLean had to compete with many for ice time so he was sent to their AHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners. He was called up from Maine in 1986 and allowed only one goal of 24 shots into the net, letting the Devils win the game. He played a few more games with them before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 1987. With the Canucks, McLean earned his first Vezina Trophy and achieved his first NHL career shutout. In 1991-1992 Mclean earned his next big achievement when he stopped all 45 shots making it his third shutout of the season and the Canucks first against Montreal. In 1994 during a game against the Kings, McLean became a part of history when he let Wayne Gretzky score his 802nd goal making Gretzky the All Time Leading Goal-Scorer. After that, McLean was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He played with them for a season before being traded to Florida for two seasons. McLean was traded yet again to the Rangers before retiring. He began his career coaching at the varsity and junior levels in 1977. He led the Oshawa Legionaries to back to back championships in 1979 and 1980. Mike Keenan moved on to coaching the Rochester Americans to the AHL championship in 1983. The following year, Keenan got his first high profile coaching job, coaching the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. He was with the Flyers for 4 years before becoming head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1988 and head coach of the New York Rangers in 1993. In 1994, he led the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup Championship since 1940. He played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals in the NHL. In the WHA he played for the Birmingham Bulls. Langway was first drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1977 and in that same year by the Bulls. Langway only played one season with the Bulls 1977-1978 before officially playing for the Canadiens. His first season in the NHL was 1978-1979 and with Montreal he won a Stanley Cup. Langway played for Montreal until 1982-1983 when he was traded to Washington. Shortly after that trade the Capitals made Langway captain; a position he held for his remaining 11 seasons. Although some thought Langway was not very offensive, he played his position phenomenally and he was awarded with the Norris Trophy as the league's best defensemen in 1983 and 1984. Internationally, Langway represented the U.S.A. and played for them in 1981, 1984 and the 1987 Canada Cup. He also played in the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1982. After retiring from playing, Langway was a coach for teams in the minor leagues. Rod Langway was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.
