Learn More about Andy Bathgate: Andy Bathgate was an elite right winger and top NHL goal scorer that played predominantly for the New York Rangers as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He entered the NHL in 1952 despite a horrific knee injury suffered in minor leagues and played all but 5 games in 11 seasons for the Rangers. He was an excellent skater, easily weaving his way through the opposing team and he had one of the hardest shots in the league. During a Rangers game vs. the Montreal Canadiens, Bathgate took a slapshot that hit goaltender Jacques Plante in the face which required stitches. When he returned to the game, Plante wore the first goalie mask in an NHL game. In the 1963-64 season, Andy Bathgate was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals. He also played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where they won two consecutive Lester Patrick Cups. In 1978, Andy Bathgate was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On February 22, 2009, Andy Bathgate’s #9 was raised to the rafters by the New York Rangers. He was the first goalie to practice and perfect the now common butterfly stance, as he'd fall on knees, spread his legs to take away the bottom corners and five-hole and let his rapier-like arm reflexes take care of the top corners. Almost every goalie in hockey today relies on the strategies he perfected. During his 18-year NHL career, which began in 1952 and ended in 1971, Glenn posted a 407-327-163 record, 2.51 goals-against-average and recorded 84 shutouts. He was a First Team All-Star seven times, won three Vezina Trophies, was voted the league's top rookie in 1955-56 and was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy in a losing cause in 1968. Despite his lengthy career, Glenn won his only Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 1961. Hall played his rookie season and more with Detroit Red Wings, before a trade involving a Red Wings goalie. Glen Hall was packaged up in the infamous Ted Lindsay trade to the Chicago Blackhawks. At the age of 36, he was left unprotected in the 1967 Expansion Draft and was chosen by the St. Louis Blues. Due in large part to Hall's heroics, St. Louis went all the way to the Stanley Cup final in their first year in the NHL. Learn More about Ray Bourque: Ray Bourque was drafted 8th overall in 1979 by the Boston Bruins, for which he played for 21 seasons as a defenceman. Bourque made an immediate impact with the Bruins during his rookie season. He was known as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, not only for his defensive skills but also for his ability to score goals. He finished his rookie season with 65 points, a record for a rookie defenceman at the time. He won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the year and a First Team All-Star selection. In 1985, Bourque and Rick Middleton were made co-captains for the Bruins. Bourque would wear the “C” to away games, while Middleton would captain at home. After Middleton retired in 1988, Bourque became sole captain of the Boston Bruins and would hold the position throughout his tenure with the team, becoming the longest serving team captain in NHL history. Despite Bourque’s achievements and success during his 21 seasons with the Boston Bruins, his team had fallen short of a Stanley Cup win. The Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in both 1988 and 1990, where they were defeated both times to the Edmonton Oilers. The 1990 were difficult years for the Bruins and Bourque requested a trade during the 1999-2000 seasons when the Bruins fell to last place in their division. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, in the hopes of capturing the elusive Cup. Ray Bourque arrived in Colorado and quickly became a positive force both on and off the ice, helping to improve his team and capturing the division title. Unfortunately, they were defeated in Game 7 of the Conference final by the Dallas Stars. Bourque returned for his only full season with Colorado where he was named alternate captain. After 22 seasons in the NHL, Ray Bourque and his Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in Game 7 against the New Jersey Devils. After team captain, Joe Sakic, took the Cup, he immediately handed it to Bourque (without hoisting it), so Bourque could take the first victory lap around the ice. Bourque had waited longer than any other player who won Cup in NHL history having played 1612 regular season and 214 play-off games before winning his Stanley Cup. He announced his retirement shortly after and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004. His number 77 was retired by both the Boston Bruins and the Colorado Avalanche making him one of 6 players to have his number retired by more than one club. Learn More about Ron Hextall: Ron Hextall was an NHL goaltender that was active in the NHL from 1984-1999, playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques and the New York Islanders. Hextall is a third generation NHL player-the grandson of Hall of Famer Bryan Hextall (NY Rangers) and son of Bryan Hextall Jr. who played in the NHL for 10 seasons, mainly for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His uncle, Dennis Hextall spent 14 seasons in the NHL. Ron Hextall brought a new style of goaltending to the NHL because he liked to come out of the net and play the puck, lending support to his team’s defensemen. Hextall was also a very aggressive goalie which lead to three suspensions of 6 or more games throughout his career. He had more than 100 penalty minute in each of his first three seasons and set NHL records for penalty minutes by a goaltender. Hextall was an excellent stick handler and became the first NHL goalie to score a goal, not once but twice, once against the Bruins on an empty net and again against the Capitals. Ron Hextall played his first four NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. A combination of injures and suspensions let Hextall to be traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1992 as part of the Eric Lindros trade when Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques who drafted him first overall in the 1991 Entry Draft. Hextall helped the Nordiques reach the playoffs and was again traded the following season to the New York Islander where he played one season before being sent back to the Flyers. Hextall helped the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. At the end of the 1998-1998 season, Hextall was waived by the Flyers and went undrafted in the expansion draft. He announced his retirement on September 6, 1999. After his retirement as a player, Ron Hextall became a Flyers scout and eventually worked his way up to General Manger of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2014. He played for the New York Americans and the New York Rangers. Originally, Rayner played for the Kenora Thistles in the Manitoba Junior League. He showed his potential by backstopping the team into getting a Memorial Cup. The year after that he turned professional and played for the Americans however he spent most of his time on the affiliate team the Springfield Indians of the AHL. When Rayner was with the Indians he led the league in shutouts and goals against average. He was named to the Second All-Star Team. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games.
