Tikkanen's first game in the NHL was the second game of the 1985 Stanley Cup Playoffs. By playing in this one game, Tikkanen was eligible to have his name put on the Stanley Cup before his career even began. Tikkanen played with the Oilers until 1991. After this his career was a bit jumpy. In 1993, he was traded to the Rangers for a season. He was then traded to the St. Louis Blues where he played 11 games when he was traded to the New Jersey Devils. In 1996-1997, Tikkanen was traded yet again to the Rangers. In the summer of 1997 Tikkanen became a free agent but soon signed a contract with the Panthers which was also a short stay as he was traded to the Capitals. He played for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Ed Giacomin overcame many obstacles on his journey to the NHL. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Giacomin spent his last three years as a player with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1978. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and his number 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989. The Howes led their team to the 1974 and 1975 Avco Cups—the WHA version of the Stanley Cup. Mark also won the Lou Kaplan Trophy as Rookie of the Year. The Howe family moved to the New England Whalers which became the Hartford Whalers when the WHA and NHL merged. The Howes played one more season together in the NHL. Mark Howe was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1982 and by then he had become a full-time defenseman. The 1985-1986 season was a career season for Mark where he put up some of the best numbers ever by an NHL defenseman with 24 goals and 58 assists for 82 points. Despite Mark Howe’s contribution, the injury-riddled Flyers were not playoff contenders. After the 1991-1992 season, Mark Howe signed with the Detroit Red Wings, his father’s former team in the hopes of winning a Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the Red Wings were swept by the New Jersey Devils in the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals. Bill Ranford backed up starting goaltender Grant Fuhr and helped lead the Oilers to the 1988 Stanley Cup Championship. The following season, Ranford was again backup for Fuhr but a serious injury left top spot open for Billy Ranford. Ranford proved himself to be a superstar for the Oilers, leading them to their second Stanley Cup Championship in 1990 against his old team, the Boston Bruins. Ranford was the unanimous choice for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Bill Ranford joined Team Canada in 1991 as the starting goalie in the Canada Cup Series. They went undefeated and Ranford was picked as MVP. He was also chosen as the starting goalie in the 1993 and 1994 World Championship where they won gold the second year. A goaltender that played for the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and the New Jersey Devils. Sauvé was originally drafted in 1975 by the Buffalo Sabres and was drafted the same year by the Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA but Sauvé’s ambition was to play in the NHL. The Sabres selected three goaltenders Sauvé being one of the more notable ones. Sauvé played four games with the Sabres that season but he spent most of his time with the AHL's Rhode Island Reds. The next few seasons Sauvé split time with the Hershey Bears and the Sabres. Laprade was known for his determination and strong work ethic and was nicknamed “the Beaver” by his teammates. In his first season with the NHL, Laprade earned 34 points in 49 games and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year. He made four All-Star game appearances throughout his career. Edgar was also a gentleman on the ice going 3 full seasons without a penalty earning the Lady Byng Trophy. Unfortunately, Edgar Laprade never got his name on a Stanley Cup. The closest he got was a heartbreaking game seven defeat in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings in 1950. Laprade hung up his skates in 1955. He was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Edgar Laprade passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. Mio first put himself on the map for professional hockey when he decided to join the Colorado College from 1972-1976. During that time Mio became a standout as he won first and second all-star awards. He also made the NCAA west first all-American team two years in a row. In 1974, Mio was officially drafted by the Blackhawks and the Blazers of the WHA but he played with neither and spent most of his time playing with smaller teams until he went to the Indianapolis Racers. Mio's goaltending was rough with the Racers and the biggest thing in his career would be befriending Wayne Gretzky. Shortly after that Mio was traded again to the Oilers in 1978. In Alberta, Mio got his first NHL action and had his first winning season in 1980-1981 before being traded again to the Rangers. With New York Mio backstopped the Rangers for two seasons, then he was traded to Detroit for a season before retiring in 1986.
