Playing on frozen ponds in his native Calgary until after nightfall, Bill Gadsby left home at the age of 17 to pursue a career on the ice. He got his lucky break when Chicago Blackhawks scout, Bill Tobin, discovered the talented defenseman and offered him a contract. After only 12 games in the minors, Gadsby made it to the NHL at the age of 18. In his debut game, he got a cut to the face that took 12 stitches to close. Gadsby was a solid defenseman, playing for the Blackhawks until 1954 when he was traded to the New York Rangers. During his tenure with the Rangers, Gadsby was elected to 4 All-Star Games and in 1957-1958, he set a defense record for 46 assists. Learn More about Ed Belfour: Ed Belfour played hockey for 19 seasons as a goaltender for NHL teams such the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers. He signed with the Blackhawks in 1989 after not being picked in the draft. Ed Belfour was named starting goalie for the 1990-91 season. In the 74 games played, Belfour had 43 wins, earning the NHL rookie record as well as Blackhawk team record. The finished the season leading the league in Wins, Save % and GAA. He won three trophies for his successful season including the Calder Memorial Trophy (outstanding play by a rookie), the Vezina Trophy (best goaltender) and the William M. Ed Belfour joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2002 season where he helped his team finish second place in their division thanks to his 37 win season (a franchise record). On November 28, 2005 Ed Belfour won his 447th career NHL game to tie for 2nd place in wins with Terry Sawchuk and surpassed him on December 19. Belfour finished his NHL career with the Florida Panthers. In 2007, Belfour signed with the Leksands IF in the Swedish second division. Learn More about Pavel Bure: Pavel Bure is an NHL Hall of Famer that spent 12 seasons playing right wing for the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Known for his outstanding speed he was nicknamed “The Russian Rocket.” He made his NHL debut in 1991 and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year, finishing the season with 34 goals and 60 points in 65 games. His rookie year was followed by two consecutive 60 point seasons. Pavel Bure was traded to the Florida in 1999 and in his first two full seasons with the franchise, Bure led the league in scoring, capturing two back to back Rocket Richard Trophies. Bure was traded to the New York Rangers on March 18, 2002. Unfortunately, a series of knee injuries left him unable to play and he announced his retirement in 2005. Schmidt played junior hockey with his two friends Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer until their rights were acquired by the Boston Bruins. Although Schmidt's rights were acquired in 1935, he did not start to play with the Bruins until 1937. Even in the NHL, Schmidt, Dumart and Bauer still played with each other and they formed the mighty Kraut Line. The Kraut Line was key factor to the Bruins success, and they won a Stanley Cup in 1939. The next year was one of Schmidt’s greatest seasons as he came out leading the league in scoring, he guided the Bruins to another first place and the team finished with the third most goals in team history. Schmidt also won another Stanley Cup in 1941. Schmidt missed three seasons after this because he, Dumart and Bauer enlisted in the Canadian Military during World War II from 1942-1945. However, before going overseas Schmidt played with Ottawa on the RCAF team and won the Allan Cup. Schmidt came back to the NHL in 1946 and he proved he was still a skilled goal scorer, finishing fourth in the league in scoring in 1947. He won the Hart Trophy for league MVP and was named captain of the Bruins in 1951. He retired part way through the 1954-1955 season to become coach of the Boston Bruins. The Hawks had floundered for years prior to Pilote's arrival. But with the likes of Pilote, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Glenn Hall, the Chicago Blackhawks became Stanley Cup champions in 1961. Pilote scored the winning or tying goal in every Blackhawks victory that season. Although 1961 pre-dated the Conn Smythe Trophy, Pierre Pilote was the obvious playoff MVP for the Hawks. His 15 points led all players in the Stanley Cup playoffs that year.. The following season Pierre Pilote became the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Pilote retired from hockey in 1969 after one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pierre Pilote's great career was recognized in 1975 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He retired having played 890 regular season NHL games, in which he scored 80 goals, 418 assists and 498 points. The Chicago Blackhawks retired the number “3” worn by Pierre Pilote and the late Keith Magnuson in a joint ceremony in 2008. Learn More about Ed Belfour: Ed Belfour played hockey for 19 seasons as a goaltender for NHL teams such the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers. He signed with the Blackhawks in 1989 after not being picked in the draft. Ed Belfour was named starting goalie for the 1990-91 season. In the 74 games played, Belfour had 43 wins, earning the NHL rookie record as well as Blackhawk team record. The finished the season leading the league in Wins, Save % and GAA. He won three trophies for his successful season including the Calder Memorial Trophy (outstanding play by a rookie), the Vezina Trophy (best goaltender) and the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest team goals against. Ed Belfour would later be traded to the San Jose Sharks where he would play for half a season before signing with the Dallas Stars as a free agent. Belfour would lead his team to the playoffs for 3 consecutive seasons although they came up short for a Stanley Cup. Ed Belfour joined the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2002 season where he helped his team finish second place in their division thanks to his 37 win season (a franchise record). On November 28, 2005 Ed Belfour won his 447th career NHL game to tie for 2nd place in wins with Terry Sawchuk and surpassed him on December 19. Belfour finished his NHL career with the Florida Panthers. In 2007, Belfour signed with the Leksands IF in the Swedish second division. He would shine in the European league with a GAA of 1.79, the best in the division. Ed Belfour retired from hockey in 2008 and was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
