He is best known for his time spent in Montreal when he established himself as one of the “Big Three” defenseman including Serge Savard and Larry Robinson. The “Big Three” were a key component to the Habs winning the Stanley Cup six times in 1971, 1973, 1976-1979. Guy Lapointe was an all-around defenseman that excelled in checking but also had a lethal slapshot. He was often used on the powerplay. He only spent two seasons with St. Louis and one with the Boston Bruins before announcing his retirement. Internationally, Guy Lapointe represented Team Canada and was chosen to play in the famous 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. He played again in the 1976 Canada Cup. Lapointe finished his career after playing 884 regular season games with 622 points, including 171 goals and 451 assists. He still holds the record for most goals for any Montreal defensemen with 28 and most goals for a rookie defenseman with 15. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Learn More about Rick Middleton: Rick Middleton was a right winger that played in the NHL from 1974-1988 for the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. His record 105 points in the 1983-1984 season tied Ken Hodges for most points by a right winger for the Boston franchise. He retired from hockey after 1005 regular season games and 988 points. He played for several teams throughout his hockey career including the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the Edmonton Oilers. Adam Oates was a first-line centre with the St. Louis Blues playing alongside superstar Brent Hull. The duo dubbed “Hull and Oates” put up prolific numbers in their two and a half seasons together with Hull scoring 86 goals one season and Oates with 115 points. Adam Oates is the only person in NHL history to centre 50 goals scorers with him assisting Hull, Cam Neely and Peter Bondra. Not only was Oates great at setting goals into motion with a career total of 1079 assists at the time of his retirement (5th in the league). He was also a consistent goal scorer himself reaching the 20-goal mark five times with a career high 45 goals. Although Adam Oates never won a Stanley Cup Championship throughout his 19 year career in the NHL, he did lead the Washington Capitals to their first Stanley Cup Finals in franchise history in 1998. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Don Cherry is a strong support of tough “Canadian” type hockey that encourages fighting and physical play. Ciccarelli signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1979. He was called up from the minors for the latter half of the 1980-1981 season where he played in 32 games scoring 18 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He began his playing career in 1950 and in the 1951-52 season became a full-time team member, winning the Stanley Cup in his rookie season. He was part of the high scoring Production Line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. He won his second and third Stanley Cup in 1954 and 1955. Although Alex Delvecchio was a top goal scorer and gifted playmaker, he was best known as a classy player and true gentleman. He was a three time recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanlike conduct. He was well liked by his teammates which led to him being named captain of the Red Wings from 1962 until he retired as a player in 1974. At the conclusion of his career, he had played 1549 regular season games with 456 goals, 825 assists and 1281 points. His number 10 was retired by the Red Wings and he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977. Following his retirement as a player, Alex Delvecchio remained with the Detroit Red Wings as head coach and general manager from 1973-1977. In January, 2017, Delvecchio was part of the first group of players to be named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
